December 2011 Moms

Josephine May

Last sunday 12/4 my water broke around 10 am.  We called the doctor and the on-call physician told us to come in at that time.  I had planned on laboring at home for a while, but since he was not my dr he wanted me in as soon as I could be there.

We got to the hospital and checked in at the nurses station.  The nurse was rude and acted like I had no idea whether my water broke or not... she didn't really believe that it had, until she had to clean up the puddle I was standing in.

I was having regular contractions at this point and felt like my body was doing well on its own.  Within 10 minutes of us arriving and checking in, the doctor ordered pitocin.  I asked if we could wait to see what my body could do on its own and the nurse refused, I had not seen the doctor at this point he was giving orders over the phone.  I asked if I could use my birthing ball, walk the halls and have my husband rub my back... all part of my birth plan that my doctor agreed to.  I said if things weren't progressing on their own after a few hours then we could talk about pitocin.  They refused and hooked me up to the pitocin.

At this point my contractions were coming one ontop of the other and to cope with them I would lean forward, it took about 2 times of this for them to come running in and tell me I couldn't do that either and that if I was in that much pain now I better get the epidural, because "this is labor" I hated that nurse and thought of punching her on multiple occasions, like when she looked at me and said, shouldn't you work on your breathing or something because this is what labor is, you probably can't do it with out the epidural...I was in a lot of pain and all they were going to allow me to do was lay on my back.  When I did get the opportunity to get up and away from the bed (to go to the bathroom) my husband would rub my back and I was getting through my contractions fine...so they soon told me I wasn't allowed to get up at all.  At this point I opted for the epidural.

Once I got the epidrual, it was smooth sailing, and shift change.  My new nurse was wonderful, and very knowledgeable and helpful.  I hope I get the opportunity to leave feedback for her.

It took 10 hours to go from 1 cm to 2 cm.  at about 11 pm I had reached 8 cm.  This is when the epidural stopped working and I was in complete agony and still on the pitocin.  Time came to push at around 1:15 am.  I pushed for 28 minutes and then she was here December 5 at 1:46 am.  7lbs 11 oz and 20 inches long.  She has a full head of BLOND hair, I was shocked.

She was completely amazing right from the start, the most wonderful sound in the world was her cry.  We tried to establish breastfeeding once she was toweled off.   Her latch needed work, and by the time they took her for her bath I was already in some serious pain from trying to nurse her.  My husband went with her everywhere to the nursery for her bath, to be weighed etc.

Within the hour we were all reunited in our postpartum room where we again tried to breastfeed.  The lactation consultant was not much help as when I told her that I didn't think she was latched on correctly she said, well you have fair skin, it will hurt you more.  Not helpful, I ended up in tears and with bleeding nipples.  I asked at that point if I could start pumping and then bottle feeding her, and was told that no in order to recieve the pump that the hospital was giving (Madela $400 pump) that I could not give her a bottle the whole time she was at the hospital.  So we soldiered on trying to get her latch correct.

My mom and dad, and my MIL and SIL were able to come in and see her first thing at 7 am.  My husband and I got to spend time just the 3 of us and my mom had treatment at 10 am, so in order for her to be able to hold the baby we had them come in at 7 am.  It was so cool to see my Mom with her, she was so excited and so was my dad.  She ended up having lots of visitors. Great grandma, aunts and uncles, it was so nice.

We were at the hospital for 1 day and she was released.  Our first days home were wonderfully challenging, but we are starting to get into the swing of things.  She is Jaundice and we go back again today to have more blood drawn, hopefully her bili numbers are going down, if not we may be done breastfeeding as it could be an incompatibility between her and my milk.

It feels like she's always been here, I can't imagine what we used to do before she arrived.  We feel so blessed and even though we are lacking in the sleep department we couldn't be happier.

Good luck to all of you who are still awaiting your arrivals.  It is such a crazy amazing experiance!!

Re: Josephine May

  • Congrats on your little girl!! With DD we had latching on problems and I ended up having to use a nipple shield. As soon as we tried it, BFing was sooooo much easier/better. If you are still having troubles I would give them a try. (something you would think the lactation consultant would have mentioned, but didn't.... the one our hospital has was a waste of time) You can get them at Babies R Us, Target, WalMart, etc. I like the Medela brand which is about $7 for 1 shield.

  • Congratulations and welcome Josephine!  May is my middle name too. :)

Seriously, I would consider complaining about that nurse.  If she was that rude with you, she must be with other people too.  And L&D is no place for rudeness!

  • Congratulations on your little blondie! I am sorry you had a rude nurse and I would complain about her attitude.  I'm also confused by their response about pumping - why couldn't you pump a bottle for your daughter?? Why would they get to decide that for you??

  • Congratulations!  I am sorry you had such a bad experience with the nurse and the lactation consultant....that's truly awful!  I do think you should complain or write a letter....that's just not acceptable.  At least you are home now with your beautiful daughter!

  • Congratulations!  Breastfeeding is definitely tough.
  • woowww.... Id seriously never use that hospital again. I cant believe the nurse REFUSED to let you labor on you own first if you were having contrax. What a jerk! Im sorry it wasnt exactly what you wanted, but so glad you have your sweet girl!

  • I know that there are disgruntled (sp?) workers everywhere but seriously like a woman in labor needs to deal with b*tchy RNs and ahole Drs!  I am sorry you had to put up with that and would file a complaint.

I hope breastfeeding gets easier for you, I too have heard great things about the nipple shields.  Congrats on your little girl!

  • Thank you all... she is truely a blessing, I had no idea I could love someone so much!  -- I will write a letter, and thanks for the tips on the nipple shields we definately bought one on the way home from the hospital and it is better, but I've been bottle feeding at night so I can pump too.

I am so blessed and spend so much time just hodling her crying about how wonderful it is to be a mom.  I love it.  I just can't get enough of her.

  • You have to complain. You have the right to refuse ANYTHING ... they don't get to refuse YOU. Seriously, they cannot just hook you up to Pitocin against your will. That should not happen.

And please get help from a real lactation consultant ... an IBLCE certified one (not some nurse who took a weekend class to be called a "lactation consultant"). I had the same experience you did, and could have saved myself a lot of pain and trouble if I'd gotten good help right at the beginning.

I'm so sorry that you ran into these people during your birth experience, but happy that you have your lovely girl now and are enjoying being her mom. :)
