Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Share how you intro'd food

My daughter just started rice cereal over the last week, and so far its gone alright.  I've been debating how to move forward from here and curious how you have done it.

So far, I've just given her a small amount of rice cereal at dinner time.  Not sure if I should offer her it at other meal times, or do I add puree fruit and veggies at those times instead of increasing the amount of rice cereal she gets a day?  I do have her 6 month pedi visit next week and can ask our doctor, but just wanted to see how it worked out for you and your baby.

  • My daughter started with rice cereal, and then I started mixing in fruit or veggies in with it...then she ate the fruits and veggies by themselves.

  • I started by giving her small bits of food. First off my finger then she would grab it and eat it herself. We never did the baby cereals. She does like oatmeal mixed with fruit for breakfast but we get the steel cut oats, grind it and cook it with BM. We only offered one meal for about 3-4 weeks, then added another. We just recently started offering 3 meals.

  • Her first taste of food was the applesauce they were sampling at costco, she grabbed my spoon and shoved it right in her mouth (she was just under 6 months).  We never gave her just cereal, we always mixed the cereal right in with the fruit or veggie.  We only did dinner for about two weeks, than we added lunch.  She's been getting 3 meals a day for about 2 weeks now.  Also, we moved off of purees very quickly as Chloe kept grabbing food right off my plate and shoving it in her mouth.

  • I tried cereal and then purees.  Both were a complete fail.  We are doing baby led weaning.  Check their website or the book for more info.  It is going really well for us.  We're about 6 weeks in and eating 2-3 meals a day.  (He often misses dinner, depending on when he gets tired for bed.)  He eats his meals with me.  To me that is really important. I'll have to start having an earlier dinner instead of waiting for hubby to get home from work.
  • We did 2-3 oz of breast milk with 3 tbsp of cereal 2 times a day for a month.

Now I'm doing 1-2 cubes (probably about 1/2 a can) of baby food with 1 tbsp of cereal 2 times a day. Bananas and squash so far. I think we'll go through as many different flavors as we can - we're making our own, so it's pretty exciting :) My DD went straight from BF to table food at around 9 months, so it's fun to do the baby food this time around :)

  • thanks everyone for sharing your food intros.  As far as BLW, I don't see that working for us even if she wasn't a preemie.  I need schedule and predictability to help keep me on track (yes, me...lol...because I'd be afraid my daughter would  end up letting me too lazy!) and will probably wait until we talk to the pedi.  I was speaking with her PT about this too, and I prob will end up adding oatmeal before the purees.
