Success after IF

If you measured behind early on

I have a good friend who recently got a BFP from her first IVF (yay!). At her 1st u/s last week she was on track and they saw one sac and one yolk sac. Today, she went again and they said she's measuring 5w4d and that the sac & yolk grew, but there is no fetal pole or heartbeat yet. She should be 6w4d today.

Her RE was not there for the u/s only a tech so she is freaking out and I'm not 100% sure what to tell her (other then to call and talk to her dr) Did anyone measure a week or so behind at this point and have a good outcome?

Thanks, experts!!!

Re: If you measured behind early on

  • Unfortunately, you'll get a little bit of both stories with that - she's right on the edge where it could go just fine, or it's about to fizzle.  The fact there's no visible FP yet at that stage does worry me. BUT... you're talking about seeing something that is SUPER tiny. Technology is not fool proof.  ;-(

I've had times where a baby was measuring behind, but had a HB... and there's lots of girls here that didn't see a HB in the 6 week range, but during their 7 week check, all was well.

She could ask to get a couple more betas done, to watch the numbers... but they start to slow down their doubling time somewhere around that gestation, so even that could fluck with her frazzled mind.

About the only thing she can do it give that baby positive vibes, lay low, and check in another week. My thoughts to your friend.

  • Up to a week behind can definitely be ok.  It can be difficult to get exact measurements that early.  Unfortunately, I would expect to see a flicker of a heartbeat at that point-- however, I go to an office with a very good machine (now at my OB's office it is like looking at a friggin etch a sketch) and my RE would never do an u/s that early without him doing it (I couldn't even schedule one with another Dr. in the practice that early) because they are going to be more skilled at seeing what they are supposed to see.

So....unfortunately, I think she is just going to need to wait it out.  I really think it could go either way-- hope it goes the good way!

  • I wish I could say I had a good outcome but I didn't.  With my fourth pregnancy I went in at 6 weeks and measured a week behind.  The next week I still measured a week behind but there was a baby with a heartbeat, although below the magic 120 heart rate my doctor likes to see.  A week later I was still measuring a week behind but the baby was still there and still had a heartbeat, but again, under 120.  Everyone told me it would be fine but I knew it wasn't going to work out.  Two weeks later the ultrasound showed a baby that had stopped growing just a few days after that third ultrasound.  I had a d&c two days later.

With situations like this - not seeing a baby or heartbeat at 6w4d - I would be thinking hope for the best but prepare for the worst.  For me, it was hard having everyone be upbeat and saying it was all going to work out when every bone in my body was telling me something was horribly wrong.  I wanted people to acknowledge my fears, not just blow sunshine at me.

She should definitely call her doctor.  I know I had an ultrasound once where it took the tech forever to find the baby as it was sort of sitting behind the yolk sac.

  • With my last IVF, I was measuring about a week behind and the outcome was not good (m/c @ 8 wks). However, with this pregnancy, a suprise BFP, I measured a week behind early on and I'm almost 21 weeks PG now, so anything is possible.

  • I measured exactly one week behind with my son right from the very beginning.  His heartbeat didn't show up until the 7 week ultrasound (I had one at 5w6d, 6w2d, 6w5d, and 7w).  I don't think there was a fetal pole visible until that point either.  It was such a rollercoaster.  I hope it works out for your friend.
