Two Under 2

when did/will you "convert" the shared room?

The girls will be sharing a tiny room (since our house, like most, won't sell).  Luckily, it's a rancher and the nursery is right off the living room.  We'll be buying a dresser to use as a TV stand that will hold clothes for the girls.  That will probably be in January.

But as this isn't as exciting as getting DD#1's room ready, I'm in no rush to "convert" what is now her OWN room into a shared room.

DD#2 will be in our room, but possibly only for a few weeks if that's what she picks (as DD#1 did).

I'm wondering if it's a waste to convert the room before she's born.

Thoughs?  What did/will you do?

Re: when did/will you "convert" the shared room?

  • We converted the kids' room before LO#2 was born. We wanted LO#1 to get adjusted to the new set up in anticipation of the baby.

We co-slept with LO#2 when she was a newborn. She slept very well back then, so at 3.5 months we moved her to the kids' shared room.

She started waking up once, then twice, then LO#1 started waking up. We battled things with both kids from teething to growth spurts. When LO#2 was 6 months old we moved LO#2's crib into our master bedroom and we put a pack 'n play in place of the crib in the kids' room. All of her other stuff, like clothes, are still in their shared room.

When LO#2 starts STTN again we will move her crib back to their shared room.

  • The only major change to the room will be to add a second crib.  We will focus on that sometime after the holidays.  I'd like to have the second crib set up at least a month before the second baby is due so DS has time to get used to it before the baby arrives.

  • We didn't move DD2 into the room with DD1 until she was 11.5 months old. It wasn't the plan to wait that long though it just kind of worked out that way. DH ended up being gone for military training for 4 months earlier this year so we moved in with my parents out of state during that time and when we got back DD2 was sleeping through the night fine in our room but DD1 was going through a regression and cutting teeth and it just wasn't time to move them in together. When DD1 started sleeping better, we did the transition and it went perfectly. They've been great at sharing since day one :)

  • Oh and we set up the room for two just before we moved DD2 in. I painted it, we made a big deal about getting DD1 a new bed (she was in her old crib that was converted to the toddler bed and we got her a new toddler bed and converted the crib back) and it worked out just fine.

She does still ask to sleep in the crib from time to time (especially for naps, they nap in separate rooms right now because DD1 doesn't really nap as much as have "quiet time") but loves her big girl bed too.

  • I'm rearranging rooms right after Christmas to lessen the amount of adjustments thrown at Jackson.  We are going to convert his nursery to sleeping/changing only and then take a room in the front of the house and make it a playroom with a pack n play and changing station for late night changes of the baby.

The baby will be in the Rock n' Play in my room until around 6 months so Jackson will have a toddler bed and crib in his room while he adjusts to the new surroundings and switching over to the bed.  That will give me about 7 months of transition period- hopefully we won't need all that time!
