So to start off with a little back story. Last week I took my dog into the vet for another round of vaccinations since we're boarding her at the end of the month. One of them was for Bordatella (Kennel Cough) and lo and behold a few days later she starts exhibiting the symptoms of kennel cough. I don't know if she got it from the vaccine or from the vet's office but she definitely has it.
I was looking around on the internet and I ran across several articles that said people with weakened immune systems (i.e. pregnancy) can get an upper respiratory infection from close contact to dogs with kennel cough...
Has anyone heard this before? I did more research and the sites seem almost 50/50 about it- some say that it's absolutely true and others are like no way. Just wanted to see what you ladies thought before I bug my doctor.
Re: Probably a ridiculous question...
It's my understanding that stuff like that can't jump from one species to another...so I don't think it's likely. Kind of like our dogs and cats don't get our colds when we are sick.
I think you are fine. The only time we panic about illnesses jumping species is for things like H1N1, swine flu, etc. Never heard of kennel cough jumping species.
Yeah, I didn't think so either. That's why I didn't give it a second thought at first- my dog's a real lap puppy and she's with me all the time.
Articles like this one: https://www.buzzle.com/articles/is-kennel-cough-contagious-to-humans.html just got me worried x.x

bordatella is not transmittable. the vaccine the vet gave was probably a spectra 5 or 7 and none of the diseases that vaccine covers can be transmitted to humans. do you live in a colder climate this time of year? if she is used to being outside the or having the house open all year. a dry artificial heat can give her a cough or agrivate allergies she already had. i would take her back to your vet, or to a different one, it may be a simple solution but i wouldn't worry about kennel cough.
sorry, i am unable to make capital letters. i'm on my bb and can only access the full site and this is one of the side effects.
Ditto what PP have said about it not being transmitted between species.
Also, is it wrong that all I can think of is the Seinfeld episode where Kramer finds a dog with a cough like his and then takes its medicine to get better?

Thank you ladies for your responses but I never said that people could get Kennel Cough... if you read I said that people supposedly could get a respiratory infection from dogs with Kennel Cough.
My dog has an appointment at the vet's today and I guess I'll just ask her.
If a dog has kennel cough it is caused by a virus specific to dogs. Therefor you can not get a respiratory infection from your dog if it has kennel cough.
The articles that say you can are misleading. Also those claiming to have gotten a RI from dogs with kennel cough probably got a zoonotic RI from their dog (that did not have kennel cough).
I don't believe you can catch a virus from another species. Just as your dog doesn't catch your colds.
Also, if it was a vaccination your dog wouldn't be contagious. Like getting the flu shot- even if you feel a little under the weather you're not going to give anyone else the flu.

There are quite a few virus that jump species... Rabies for an example most people have heard of.
