Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Only 16 to 24 oz

So I just read the bumps week 37 info and it said to limit your LO's formula and breatsmilk intake to 16 to 24 oz. Is it really suppose to be that low? I thought it should be closer to 32 for the day or so and that when it comes to breast milk there's no need to really limit the amount LO takes in. Am I totally off my rocker?

Just so it there's no misunderstanding, LO only gets BM and 2-3 solids a day. Thanks for the help!

  • Wow, I have NO idea where they'd get that info from. Until 1 year old, your LO's primary source of sustenance should be BM/FF. My LO is eating about 32-36oz right now (no solids yet) and I can't imagine only feeding him 16-24oz. There's zero reason to limit the amount your LO is eating if there's no associated health issues for that limitation. If they're hungry, feed them BM/FF FFS lol.

  • My pedi gave me a feeding guide for infants. It says, formula fed babies will eat (on average): 6-8 months they will eat 3-5 times a day consuming 24-32 oz, at 8-10 months, they will eat 3-4 times a day consuming 16-32 oz and for 10-12 months they will eat 3-4 times a day consuming 16-24 oz.

For breastfeeding, it just states "on demand."

The amount of formula will decrease as they start eating more solids. It's not so much of "limiting" their intake, but they are getting more calories from other sources.

Don't worry about how mush your LO is or isn't taking as long as she is gaining weight and having plenty of wet and solid diapers.

Thanks for this info, ams. Nora still takes 32 oz a day even though she gets some solids. I keep thinking she'll start to wean herself, and last week there were 2 days when she took between 23 and 26 oz, but she's back up to 32. ::Shrugs::

  • At my 6 month apptn Pedi told me DS should be taking between 24-30 ..no less than 24.  Since we started solids he has basically forfeited his after dinner bottle. Now that we started lunch the oz also has dropped. Right now he's getting 26oz per day. He'll be 7 months tomorrow.

  • My LO averages 28 - 32 oz a day.  She also has 3 servings of solids.  Seems to work for us.
