Stressing About LO's 1st Birthday

Am I going to be a terrible, terrible mother if we don't throw a huge party for LO's 1st Birthday?  DH works the weekend before and weekend after his birthday (12 hour shifts 7a-7p or 7p-7a) so before/after work is not really good either. We are just thinking of inviting the grandparents and my two siblings over for dinner on his actual b-day (a Tuesday).   It will be my first day back at work after the new year but I will have plenty of time to get the house ready.

And then I think I am going to take 90% of his b-day presents and put them away until June/July since we will still be on Christmas overload.

  • We're not having a party. At all. It'll just be the three of us and a small cake.

You made me feel a whole lot better.  I see so many people talking about this big to-do for the 1st Birthday and I felt bad keeping it small.  Both sets of grandparents and my two brothers live locally so having them over is not a huge thing - we've done that on many occasions.

  • We aren't doing much of a party either. I'm thinking it will be a small gathering at a local pizza place.

  • I think it's what is best for you!

We are having a party, but all our family live out of state. It's just a good reason to have everyone get together and have a good time, for us.

I say to each their own. Your LO won't remember. I've always said the 1st birthday is a celebration for the parents. It's like a big "thank God we made it through that first year". But now that we are getting into the 2nd and 3rd years I'm realizing there is way more to be thankful for making it through :) (not to scare anyone ;)

I think you'll be fine! There's definitely nothing to feel bad or guilty about, for sure!

  • I agree, to each their own. I don't think anyone would judge if you didnt make a huge deal.  Do whats best for your family, and be sure to take pics so we can see your LO smashing a cake ;-)

  • I saw pictures of my first birthday party (I'm a late May baby) and I'm in the highchair in the yard with my closest immediate family (maybe 6 people tops) and I have a 1st birthday hat on and cake all over my face - that's my "memory" and it makes me smile every time!
  • We had a huge party for my first, like 50 people. It was terrible. I couldn't even enjoy my little girl eating cake or anything because I was so busy worrying about everyone else.

For Alex, we're having a party at home with just family. I want to be able to enjoy every minute. Besides, they don't remember it anyways. :)

BTW, my hubby does 12 hr swing shifts as well. It sucks.

  • On her real birthday my initial plan was to buy some cupcakes and just hang out at home... but there are going to be craploads of people in town, so um, I'm just going to buy A LOT of cupcakes and bring them over to MIL's house. lol.

We're having a big party on her due date because her first few days and weeks were really hard, and birthdays are kind of crazy in our family.  No way in hell are we having it on her actual birthday though.  I'm already stressed enough with Christmas as it is.

    What was your due date?

  • Jan 19th.  We're having the party on the 21st, as opposed to Christmas Eve.  No brainer IMO, heh.
