Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Weight Loss

DD has lost almost a pound in the last month. She is a really picky eater. She will eat plain pasta, bread but not sandwiches, cheese, chicken fingers, fruit chunks and green beans but only a few little pieces of each and somedays she won't even touch some of the stuff she normally likes. Snacks are 2 times a day consisting of crackers/cereal and yogurt. Usually she won't open her mouth or attempt to eat anything new. I have been shoving as much yogurt, oatmeal and fruit/veggie purees as I can down her after she refuses to eat much finger food. Also she has 21 oz of whole milk a day. Her Dr. won't see her unless she is ill however I know by her 15 month appt, she may be down 2+ pounds from her 12 month appt which to me is a huge problem. Has anyone experienced this or know any good suggestions to stop the weight loss? Any tips or tricks that maybe I haven't thought of? Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Weight Loss

  • Have you tried feeding her with a "grown up" fork or letting her try to? Sometimes DS won't eat unless he's in charge of the utensils (we have sturdy plastic forks that are really more like sporks. They are adult size but not pointy like metal ones)

Try to feed her foods with high fat/calorie contents. What type of yogurt are you feeding her? Maybe see if she'll eat Greek yogurt. Cottage cheese. Avocado. Put some olive oil on the pasta. Will she eat cheese, peanut butter, or hummus on the crackers?

The doctor won't see you when you have a concern regarding her health? I think I might try again... or see someone new.

  • 1. Find a new doctor. 2. Tell your current dr they are an idiot for not seeing a child unless they are ill.

Seriously though, keep trying the different things you are doing to get her to eat. And I ditto using a big girl fork and spoon.

  • Thanks for all the suggestions. I never thought of some of them and will be trying them out. Unfortunately I live in a small town with few doctors so finding a new one isn't really an option.

WHAT???  GET A NEW DOCTOR!  Our pedi will see DS for whatever reason I see fit.  ANY part of her life - diet, mood, sleep, illness, ANYTHING, could have something to do with health and development.
