travel-related advice needed

DH and I are planning a trip to Hawaii at the very end of the year that will overlap with our 5-year anniversary.  We've been talking for a while about taking a helicopter tour of the island (Kauai).  When I mentioned it to my OB at our last appt, she didn't say that it would be bad, but mentioned that helicopters have a greater risk of crashing than general air travel.  DH still wants to go and I was on board until I started hearing about people dying in helicopter accidents (really only about 10 per 50,000 over the last 15 yrs).  Thoughts?

On an unrelated note, if anyone has been to Kauai recently, we'd love recommendations of things to do!

  • I think you're still more likely to die in a car accident than in an helicopter accident.  I say go for it and have fun!

    THIS! ^_^

  • We were in Kauai in 2008...  I think the helicopter tour is a must - we used Blue Hawaiian.  A lot of the things we did I would not recommend for a pregnant lady (horseback riding, big hiking, tubing in old plantation irrigation ditches).  Overall Kauai is my favorite island (we have done Hawaii / Big Island, Maui, Lanai, Oahu, and Kauai).

     But I do recommend...

?         Dinner Cruise to Napali Coast - Captain Andy's

    Poipu, Kukuiula Small Boat Harbor

?         Kayak Wailua River and Waterfall Hike

4-484 Kuhio Hwy, Kapaa, HI 96746 lzocated in the South parking lot of the Coconut Marketplace Shopping Center in Wailua on Route 56 (Kuhio Highway) just a half mile north of the Wailua River.

?         Dinner @ Roy?s Poipu Bar and Grill in the Poipu Shopping Village ?        Puka Dog in Poipu ?       Driving along the North Shore and just getting out and stopping at all the beaches

  • We went to Kauai and Oahu back in October for 2 weeks. We loved Kauai!!! It's our favorite island, we did the wings over Kauai, which is a bi-plane instead of the helicopter. The helicopter was much more expensive.

We got a jeep. It was great to have for driving around the island, we did some off roading too.

You have to check out the Waimea Canyon, Jo Jo's for shaved ice, the Shrimp Station is yummy to eat at, The Russian Fort...go back to the beach area, it is gorgeous back there. Drive to Hanalei. If you have time, take a catamaran around the Napali Coast. It is by far, our favorite island.

By the way...we stayed at the Kauai beach Resort...formally the Hilton. We used priceline and got it for cheap!!

  • You'll love it!!  The PP all had the key places to stop and see!  You have to see the canyon, but I might play it by ear on the hike... The one we took to find the waterfall a tough one and I'm not sure how far you'll be along etc.

As for the helicopter... I agree that it's probably more unsafe to drive a car than to go in a helicopter!  We ended up doing the NaPali dinner cruise to see the coast instead of a helicopter ride, however they were adamant about if you were pregnant you could not go, so the helicopter ride would be your only option to see that part of the island and it is absolutely stunning so worth the helicopter ride in my opinion!

Have a great time!!  Have a few virgin Mai Tais for us! :)

This is what we went on and they didn't let anyone who was pregnant go...

  • My husband and I spent a few days on Kauai for our honeymoon in May. We stayed at the Koa Kea in Poipu. If you DO decide to go on a helicopter tour (not sure if they let pregnant women go anyway), do the "Jurassic Park" one. Only one company does it and I'm sorry but I can't remember the name :-/  Anyway, they are the only company that is allowed to actually land at the waterfall that is in the beginning of Jurassic Park. That makes the tour considerably more expensive but it is absolutely amazing. The whole tour was about 90 minutes and included that, Waimea Canyon and the Na Pali coastline.

One thing I'd love to do again if I ever go back is eat at the Beach House, also in Poipu. Go at sunset and make a reservation a couple weeks in advance for that time. You will NOT regret it. The most amazing view and my husband said it was the best piece of tuna he ever had (and we live in Maryland!!).

Another thing we did is rent a Jeep and just drove around as much as we could. It was pretty fun!

  • Yay! I live in Hawaii and actually went to Kauai in March, then we had the tsunami warning and had to evacuate ;p But We also stayed at the Koa Kea in Poipu, it was beautiful. I think it's the nicest hotel we have stayed in for all of our island hops, great customer service, wonderful room and it's worth it to get the ocean view on priceline. We saw whales from our room and the beach every day that we were there. The hotel restaurant had great breakfast, and we love the Roy's on Oahu so we tried the one on Kauai and it was great. We did a helicopter tour and they did ask if I was pregnant, which at the time I wasn't. But I will say I thought it would be so cool to do the helicopter tour but while I was up in the air I got really sick. I'm not sure if it was nerves or motion sickness but I felt so sick and also anxious! there's no way I could handle it while pregnant but I'm a big wuss ;)  Waimea Canyon is also great but keep in mind, if you have to use a bathroom, use them when you see them because there are points where you can't find one. And go EARLY to do the canyon if you want to see the ocean at the NaPali lookout, by mid afternoon the rain clouds start rolling in and you lose all visibility. No matter what you decide to do, you will have a great trip, it's a beautiful island. Happy anniversary!
