Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

if your kids don't eat meat or veggies

When did they start eating them? My kids won't try any meat at all. Even if i hide it they pick it out :(. DS eats veggies but DD won't touch them.

Just wondering when your kids started trying more foods. I have given them the same things over and over and they won't touch it.

They only eat pasta w/cheese (no red sauce), P&J, hummus, yogurt, Cream cheese sandwiches, tomatoes, pickles, all fruit, pizza, grilled cheese and that's pretty much it. They seem pretty healthy but i am trying to get them to eat what we eat so it's easier on me. I work f/t and having to cook them something, our dinner and then make their lunch for the next day is tiring.

Thanks!

Re: if your kids don't eat meat or veggies

  • We just recently found out that E loves broccoli, right around 2.5 yrs. That is about the only veggie she will eat, other than pickles and raw carrots occassionally. We just keep offering them to her and I am sure eventually she will get it.

I found some plates that have 4 sections in them. I put a different food in each section and that seems to help. Usually I give her 2-3 things I know she will eat and 1-2 things she hasn't tried yet. Usually if you leave her alone and not pester her, E will at least try a bit of the new things. The other day it was fish sticks. She tried a bite and decided she didn't like them but she ate all her fries and applesauce.

DH and I both work FT so I understand the cooking and being tired thing. Either offer them some of what you eat, or give them leftovers from the previous night. That might help. Oh, and don't stress too much. As long as they are growing and healthy they will be fine. I read somewhere that kids can live on mac & cheese * hotdogs for a year...despite the fact that it isn't the healthiest in the world.

  • My second son is almost 2 and is still picky about meat, he will eat sausage, chicken nuggets, lunchmeat and hot dogs and that's about it.  My older son was also picky about meats and it was when he was 3.5 + that we were able to wheel and deal with him more about eating and therefore trying new foods.  DD has always been my eater, very few thing she will not eat.  DS1 is still off and on about veggies as is DS2.

  • My DD is usually pretty good about eating whatever we are having. But I've been following the old "If she doesn't eat what I cook, then she's not eating" rule. We did BLWing so I think that helped a lot with what she will eat and not eat.

Have you tried giving her those puree veggies in a pouch? I think Gerber and Plum Baby, ect make them. I just started giving DD those and she loves them.

  • DS has gone in phases. He ate EVERYTHING until he was about 13 months old. Then, he absolutely refused to eat meat for about 2-3 months. He started eating meat again, was back to eating most things, and now he's not into veggies. Sigh. He'll eat them sometimes, but nothing like before. As long as there is one thing on his plate I know he'll eat, I don't really worry. He is pretty stubborn anyway - a lot of the time he'll finish one thing (usually a bread product) and ask for more before touching the rest of his food. He will whine for a bit, but eventually go back to his plate and eat other stuff (usually). With him it's getting him to take the first bite, which is the hardest part. After that, he usually realizes he likes it and eats it.
