Runners-- rec's on watches or keeping pace

I always used to run on a treadmill with incline, but after the kids, it is too hard to make it to the gym, so I've been waking up early to run in my neighborhood.  It is going okay, but my pace is SO SLOW!  I don't know what to do, but I think I need to pay more attention to my time and distance.  I also run with my dog, which doesn't help.

I don't have an iPhone, so I've been looking at various watches (gps, foot pods, pedometers, etc).  I'm leaning toward a pedometer watch (Tech4o accelerator), though part of me thinks I should just bite the bullet and get GPS.

  • I have a Garmin 305 and love it!!  I never run without it.  I am buying my dad one for Christmas this year.  He only uses a stop watch and said he doesn't need a Garmin, but I want him to have one. I am purchasing him the 405.

  • I also have a Garmin 305 and never run without it.  I really, really love it!  I find that it makes the runs go by faster when you can track your pace, your mileage, etc. And if you want to work on your speed and do interval training, it's essential.  I think that the 405 was on sale on Amazon a little while back for $150, which is such an incredible deal.  If you track them on Camel, camel, camel, you can probably get a Garmin for that amount.  If you can afford the price tag, I doubt you'll be disappointed :)
  • Another vote for the Garmin 305.  Just remember once you Garmin you won't be able to stop.  If your run without it, its referred to as running naked.  GL!

  • I have the very basic Garmin 205. It doesn't have the heart rate monitor feature, but I already have a Polar HRM, so didn't need another one. It is pretty awesome, I was skeptical thinking I didn't need one, but it is nice. I sometimes go without it - more so now that I am not trying to hit certain paces or training distances, and know my route mileages.

Before Garmin, I just used mapmyrun.com or the USATF website running routes and a basic stop watch.  I run the same routes, so over time I learned where the mile markers are.

  • I have a Garmin Forerunner and really like it.  I think I have the 405 model.  I bought it back in 2006 and it still works.  I really only use it when I'm doing my speed workouts (to make sure I keep my pace up) and my distance workouts (to make sure I keep a steady pace).  Other than that, I don't really time my regular tempo runs.  I go mostly based on my output on my tempo runs.

  • I'm also a Garmin fan. I currently use the 210. It's an old model (I got it on sale when they stopped making them) but it's lasted me a few years and still going strong. I had to replace the band last summer but got a cheap band that fits at Target.

I do NOT recommend the nike+ system...footpod or watch or whatever they make. I'm a running coach and one of my girls had the watch. The mileage was WAY off every time she wore it (a couple of us had Garmins).  I love my Garmin!

  • Love, love, love the Garmin 305.  It replaced an older Garmin GPS I had for about eight years before this one.
