Yuck - DD has a head wound - stitches - I'm nervous about scarring

Thankfully, when DD's head met the car door, she only required 3 stitches and did not have a concussion or any other more serious issues.  BUT, the 3 stitches right in the middle of her forehead just look so painful.  I see the threads and the skin being pulled so tight around the wound, and I am really nervous that she will have a giant scar right in the middle of her sweet little forehead.  This just happened on Monday night, so I know we are early in the healing process.  We are being vigilant about cleaning the wound an applying antiseptic.  But I can't help but be worried.  Anyone have advice or reassurance about healing from facial wounds requiring stitches?  I personally have never had to have stitches on my face.

  • I am not a scar expert, but have scar facial experience ; ) my oldest was born with a cleft lip so he will always have a scar - but he stills look awesome ; ) protection is key to minimizinga scar. It takes about 12 -18 months for a scar to heal, so wearing a hat and sunblock are very important. Other than that some people think the scar ointments help. We used emu oil and tried bio oil with massage after about a month. But some surgeons don't think any oil like vit e makes a difference. Also it will look the worst at about 6 weeks until 6 months (obviously depending on size). My friends daughter needed stitches on her cheek a year ago, you cannot tell that she ever had stitches/scar. Hope this helps!

  • DD2 has already had two sets of stitches -- two on her eyebrow in February and three on her chin in October. :( The eyebrow scar is barely noticeable after 10 months; of course the eyebrow helps cover it somewhat but not much since she is so fair. The one on her chin is more recent and still healing; there are times when it's very light, and other times when it's darker, like when she's upset.

The plastic surgeon who did both stitches recommended using Neosporin while the stitches were in, and then until the scab healed. After that, I've been massaging the scar twice a day with Cetaphil lotion. (I forget the type of moisturizer he told me to use, but Cetaphil fit the bill.)

I hope that helps, and I hope your daughter heals smoothly. :)

  • My DD had 14 stitches over her eye - from her eyebrow straight up to her hairline (her head met a table at school).  That was the day before her 2nd birthday and you can hardly see the scar now.  Once the stitches were out, we put Vitamin E Oil on the scar twice a day (still do some days in fact).  It really did heal well, though it was more noticeable during the summer when she was a little tan. We keep her scar totally covered in sunscreen ALL the time and sent the CA Baby stick to school to make sure they apply it every time they go outside.  We kept a baseball type hat on her right after it happened too.  GL and hope it heals quickly and well!!!
