C-sections

tips to prepare and an intro

Hi ladies,

I wanted to get some insight as to how I can prepare for the possibility of a csection.  I went in for an induction this past Tuesday, and it did not work.  I will be going in again on Monday night for cervadil and pitocin on Tuesday.  I will be 42 weeks on Tuesday, so if the induction fails again, I will have to go the csection route.  Anything special I should add to my bag?  Any tips as far as still being able to BF successfully?  Insight on coping with the emotions?  Just any information you could share would be great.  I'm still hoping to go into labor on my own before then, or at least have a successful induction.  If it doesn't work though, I know many, many people have positive csection stories......I am just feeling so bummed that my body is not responding to all the ways that I have tried to spark labor.  Indifferent  TIA!

Re: tips to prepare and an intro

  • There are lots of previous posts on things to pack, so you might want to browse the board. The main differences between packing for a regular birth and packing for a c/s are that you'll be there for a longer period of time, and you'll want to avoid any underwear or clothing (including what you wear home) that hits your bikini line in any way shape or form.

As far as BF goes, there's no difference in a c/s birth or a vaginal. If all goes according to planned, after a c/s most women who've had non-emergent c/s are able to BF for the first time in recovery shortly after the birth. You may need to practice different holds due to pain in your abdomen, but your post partum nurses can help with that. While milk can take a bit longer to come in for some women post c/s, there isn't a whole lot you can do about that, just keep feeding according schedule.

  • Ask for a belly band from your nurse for comfort.  It helped me alot, and insurance covered it.  I used it for several weeks.
  • Tips for section

    1) Take the meds!!! Don't be a hero...if they are prescribed take them :)

    2)  The more you move after they get you up and okay you to do so the better it becomes.  of course it is going to be a slow go in the beginning but moving around a little helps.

    3)  Pushing a pillow into your stomach helps when you have to laugh, sneeze, cough. (obviously not too hard :))

As far as things to bring...I always need a feeding pillow in the beginning and I formula feed.

I like having my own pillows, underwear, etc.  make sure your underwear or pants hit above bikini line or below....I tend to go above.

Good Luck to you :)  Enjoy meeting your baby!  It is truly the best feeling in the world :)

I don't dilate...even though I go into labor so sections it has been for me.
