Love your car?

So this year just  keeps getting better... we were t-boned last night.  Some guy in a high speed chase on a road rage incident took us out at 80 mph as I headed through the green light north bound on Mopac at Slaughter.  We're okay... very very sore... but very lucky to be alive, walking and not in surgery.  I can't help but believe our angel was looking out for us.

I'm choosing to look at the bright side... our car was totaled so that means new car for me.  Tell me what you love about yours.  We had a Honda Accord and that's high in the running since it had air bags come out of every where!  But maybe I should transition to a more suitable "mom" mobile since 2012 has to be my year!

  • We just got a 2012 Nissan Sentra and so far we love it, but it might be too small for you if you're used to the Accord.  I have a Hyundai Tucson that I have had since 2005 and never had any problems with it and it gets pretty good gas mileage for an "older" car.

  • Oh my gosh! I'm so sorry that happened to you but so glad you're ok!

If I were replacing a sedan, I'd get an Accord or Camry (my current vehicle). If I were replacing with children in mind, I'd probably get a mid-sized SUV. My plan, before we found out we were having twins, was to get a Lexus SUV, Toyota 4Runner or Volvo XC90. The Lexus and Volvo have very high safety ratings and I love anything made by Toyota.

You could definitely fit one baby in a Camry or Accord (or any sedan), as I've done for the past 2 years, but if you don't want to have to keep getting a new car as you add more kids, I'd probably just jump straight to the SUV. Or you could do what we're doing and just get a minivan (insert many jokes here about going over to the dark side). My husband and I are both very tall--I know Joyco has her two in a sedan (can't remember which one), but that doesn't work for us legroom-wise.

  • I'm so glad you're ok! Soooo scary!

I have a 2009 Jetta TDI and love it. Yes it's a diesel but so worth it. It costs about $50 to fill up and I get over 400 miles per tank. I can easily go 4 weeks and only fill up once. It seats 5, and it comes with lots of options and upgrades. I think with every upgrade it's $27k. It also has a huge trunk.

  • How scary! Glad you guys are ok. I love my car! 2011 subaru outback. Gets good gas mileage, very high safety ratings, and is in between an suv/car. And it has a ton of space. Granted, it's not the cutest car in the world, but I feel really safe driving LO around in it. Sedan-wise we love our audi a4.
  • How scary!  So glad you are both okay!!  I love my Honda CRV.  It drives like a car and has plenty of space.  I would think even with a carseat or 2 there would be plenty of room for our family.

  • I bought a Ford Escape in June and I LOVE it! Its a great small SUV that gets amazing gas mileage. It's great for hauling stuff for the house and baby. The ride isn't rough and I love the bluetooth that is standard on it.

Please be safe and we're glad you're ok.

We have the Jetta Sportwagen 2011 TDI and LOVE IT!  Ditto what AngelAggie said.  Getting 400 miles out of a tank that costs $50 is one of our favorite features!  I highly recommend test driving one.

  • ETA: I'm SO glad you're okay!!! How scary!

I IoVe my Volvo XC60 SO MUCH. But if I had to do it again, I might have taken another look at the Subaru outbacks. Except for not having a USB port, it's a pretty great car and I'm hoping DH gets one when his Acura finally dies.

  • Another pleased Honda owner here - I drive a Pilot. Although with y'all walking away from an accident that bad, I'd seriously consider another Accord. Your little angel was working hard last night!!!

  • OMG how scary!  I'm so glad you weren't hurt.  I hear you on the year thing- I just had 2 stitches put in my foot.  It HAS GOT to get better than this!

I have a Nissan Rogue and I love it!  I get 24 MPG average and it's a smallish SUV.  Tons of room and very nice ride.

  • I'll second the Nissan Rogue. Lots of trunk space, and very mommy friendly but not too big.

  • Oh my goodness - how terrible!! I'm so sorry you were involved in something so scary, and very glad you are okay! We drive through that intersection all the time too - I can't imagine anyone going that fast through there - yikes! As far as cars go, we love DH's Altima, and while I drive a minivan now, we loved my VW Touareg that I had before this if you are considering SUVs . Also, hopefully you already have an attorney, but if you need a recommendation, feel free to e-mail me at laura at serranos dot com. We have a very good friend who handles cases like this if you do need some help. (I hesitated to include this because I didn't want to seem pushy at all, so I hope it doesn't come across that way, but just in case you are looking for a recommendation...) Hope you feel better soon!

We are a Subaru family. I have the Outback station wagon and I love it. I'm glad to see others who say that it's good for toting around a kid or two!

  • Oh my goodness!  So glad to hear you guys are ok.  I hope you feel better soon.

We are a honda/acura family as well.  If I was buying another car I would buy a TL or an accord.  We switched to an MDX after LO was born and I love it.  We bought it used to save money.  We drove the pilot as well and realy liked it.

  • We are a BMW family. We started out with a 3 series, then traded up to a 5 series and in May traded the car in for a x5. They are safe vehicles, drive great and hold their value. We've never been upside down on a trade, and we've owned all three in the last three years. BMW's certified program is amazing, as is their customer service.

  • My IL's and BIL have GMC Acadia's. My mom just traded in her Camry for a Nissan Touge and she's in love. She swears I'll love it.
  • OMGosh, I'm so glad that you are ok!  That's terrible.

I just traded in my CRV for a GMC Acadia and I loooooooove it so very much.  With two in carseats, my CRV just didn't feel big enough.  It was going to feel even smaller when my little one moved to a convertible.  I love my Acadia now.  It has all the bells and whistles those luxury cars have, but was much more affordable to buy one of these new with the warranty and all.  Remote start (which I have LOVED these cold mornings), heated seats, back up camera and alert system....I felt very important around kids and all the little ones in my neighborhood.  I've got a USB port so I can control my iphone with my audio steering wheel controls.  I highly suggest you take a look at it.  You're up a little higher, but not truck high--and it handles more like a car than a truck.  My car seats 8 and we have done so comfortably.  I think I read somewhere it has more cubic feet than a Yukon.  I love it.  So it doesn't have sliding doors?  I haven't had a problem yet getting kids in and out in car seats!  And as far as storage goes, I once had all three of my strollers in the back comfortably--travel system Chicco, MacLaren, and BOB.  I usually leave one in there so I don't lug the carrier around and then somehow we ended up with the others in there....and still had room for groceries.

If it means anything, our neighbor two doors down just got one!  ;-)  I would be a great sales rep, they could hire me.  LOL.  Take a look, you won't regret looking.

  • Wow - I'm glad you guys walked away from the accident without serious injury.  There really was an angel watching out for you guys!

I'm an SUV lover after being hit one too many times in a car . . . that being said, I love my Acura MDX.  There's an RDX version also that is equally as nice, but a little smaller.  I love the option of having 3rd row seating without it being suburban sized.  It has 4 wheel drive, so I feel safer in it when driving than I did when I had my grand cherokee.  It seems to handle/grip the road really well.  The entry levels have a lot of bells & whistles - we upgraded to whatever the 2nd level was.  To me, its kind of a fancy Honda Pilot with a different body style.  Both made by Honda - with the top end Pilot being the entry level MDX.

DH has a Nissan Altima that is ~4 yrs old and no big repairs as of yet (**knock on wood**).  He really likes that car, and its roomy and can easily fit 5 ppl.
