vegetarian

I am a Vegetarian (Pescetarian  specifically - meaning I still eat seafood)

I have been a vegetarian for over a year now and feel great about my decision and my body feels great. But lately I've been CRAVING mcdonalds sausage. of all things possibly the worst meat there is lol. I haven't gave in because when put in a stuck between a rock and a hard place (eat a meatball sub or starve the rest of the day in the hot sun) I ate the meat and threw it all up. My stomach can't handle it.

But point being...does any one know of any good meatless "meats" lol. I have tried most of the Boca and theyre OK but usually smothered in bbq sauce.

 Thanks =]

Re: vegetarian

  • I'm not a vegetarian, but really like many things made by Morningstar Farms.  They make a variety of things and I think the flavors are really good. My favorite is the spicy black bean burger.

My husband laughs at me because even though I had a pretty balanced diet before---it seems all I want are fruits and veggies and sushi once in awhile.

I hope you find something that will satisfy your craving!

  • I've been a pescetarian since 2007. Whenever I crave meat, I try to think what of nutritional value that particular craving and replace it with something else. This, however, proves difficult while FI is scarfing down a juicy burger and my mouth is watering -_-

  • LOL I did that the other day watching my BF eat a burger I heated up a boca and COVERED it in bbq sauce. he thought it was histerical.... grrrr. but yea other than the random mcdonalds craving and chipotle (strictly vegetarian of course =]) I crave oranges and kiwis and eel sushi lol.

  • I was a veggie for 15 years ...and my favorite brand of meaty type products is same as the first reply....Morningstar! Especially the grillers!

I also would bake portabello mushrooms with a balsamic glaze when I wanted something of a meaty texture.

I will often make veggie chili (no beans though...texas style) ...with some form of soy crumbles, tomatoes, onions and tomato paste and such..whatever else I wanna throw in...but that with some cheese on top over a baked potato...mmmm...super satisfying and meaty!!

  • I agree with PP - when you feel you are craving some meat thing, decide what it is about the craving that is desirable -- the saltiness? do you need more iron? texture? are you just starving? lol, then think about what can meet your need.  For boca, instead of bbq sauce, try just making a fancy burger -- onion, tomato, pickle, ketchup, mustard, lettuce - possibly add a slice of pepper jack cheese melted....some other ideas : edamame, black bean burgers - food process with ketchup and hot sauce, and garlic, they are kinda pasty, but really delicious.  Smart dogs are good, but make sure you've got toppings for them, when they are plain they suck.  Also a chili with black beans, northern white beans, corn, kidney beans, garbanzo beans, onion, garlic, carrot, pepper, chopped tomato, don't forget the cumin...yum!  Good luck getting over that hump, and whatever you do - don't give in to McDonalds, gross. :)

  • I'm a pescetarian, too, and as a couple of PPs said, Morningstar is the best! I don't eat fake meat products often at all, but I make tacos with their veggie crumbles sometimes, and also like their meatless bacon and sausage.

  • So funny!! I am not a vegetarian, but have practically became one since becoming pregnant. Meat is so sickening to me now!!
  • I love the morning star meats. they have chicken nuggets, and the have this fake bacon, it looks totally fake, but it's so good on a whole grain wheat bread with some mayo, tomato, sprouts, and red onion. Mmm.

  • I LOVE morning star! Its my favorite. I liek it MUCH better than Boca. I have tried some of the Quorn but it wasnt amazing, just ok.

  • Fried tofu nuggets with edamame were awesome. You can find the recipe on justbento.com, along with a HUGE amount of high protein vegetarian recipes. I edit the salt, IMO she's a salt fiend. Also, if you're willing to add poultry to the mix, Jimmy Dean makes an excellent turkey sausage patty. And, someone makes a really good turkey kielbasa.
  • Morningstar FINALLY makes a breakfast sausage that is made with organic soy and they are really good. Not quite McDonalds but close enough - I haven't eaten at McDonalds in >5years so I can't really remember the sausage there.

Morningstar also made a maple breakfast sausage but I haven't seen it in quite a while - that was the best one!

  • This is so funny because I am vegetarian and I have been craving sausage too! Why that meat, I have no idea:) I've been making "sausage" and egg muffins at home. I've been making Trader Joe's fake sausage patties. Those are currently my favorite. I did eat sausage links from a cafe a few months ago and they did make my queezy. I regret eating them, but they looked sooooo good.

My favorite burger is Gardenburger-Black bean chipotle. Its got a little kick to it so its not so bland. This is the only burger I've eaten for a while.

FYI I was vegan until getting preg, and that went out the window with my monster appitite and cravings.
