Baby making gasping noise

Okay, this is freaking me out. Every time I lay Harper on the ground to play she makes this horrible gasping for air noise. I can't tell if it's her just discovering a new noise or if she's having problems breathing or with drainage or something. She slept fine all night on her back and didn't make the noise, and doesn't make it when she's sitting up. Only when she's laying down playing. Can anyone help? Has your kid "discovered" this noise too?

Re: Baby making gasping noise

  • Sounds like she is just experimenting with her mouth and sounds when playing. She isn't showing signs of distress because she can't breathe. She isn't doing it every time she's on her back. She is sleeping well. My DS never makes as much noise sitting up as he does laying down. I would keep an eye on it. You can repeat the noise to her while playing to see how she reacts. If its intentional, she might make a game out of it. (?)

And also, where have you been? Your baby is beautiful!

Thanks Tuna! I will try repeating the noise and see what she does...she usually tries to repeat noises we make.

I know, I know...I've been MIA for a long time. It seems that every time I have a free minute I end up doing something else around the house, instead of getting on TB (oh, how times have changed). And thank you...that picture is from when she was 2 weeks old...we're 3 months tomorrow! Crazy how time flies.

I hear ya. I'm on when I'm nursing Ian, and that's about it. Anyways, it's good to see you :) Stop doing things around the house and slack off with the rest of us!

  • I agree with Tuna.  Sounds like Harper is experimenting with her voice.  DD makes some strange noises too, but doesn't seem upset by them and is sleeping/eating/breathing well.

Now that I think of it . . . she does sometimes make a raspy-breathing noise when she's on her change table or lying down on her playmat, etc.  She doesn't make it when she sleeps.  I was a bit concerned at first, but it never seemed to bother her and wasn't consistent.

I think these babes just like to test our anxiety sometimes :)

  • DD does this often. She even did it when we were at the pulmonologist. He said it is called a "Moto reflex" and that its totally normal. It is in relation to their startle reflex.

DD throws her arms out when she does it, does your LO do that too? It freaked me out before I knew what it was!!!

  • My DD did this when she was about 2 1/2 months old, I freaked out, called the pedi, and almost took her to the ER. Turns out, she was messing with me. She still does it sometimes, and then she laughs. For us, she definitely just found a new noise and liked the reaction she got from mommy.

  • DD is doing that now.  She does it when she is in her chair mostly.  She babbles a bit, then GASP! then babbles a bit more.  She seems to only do it a t home though.  It scares DH but i guess because I am with her all the time I have gotten used to it.

  • Yuuup, P's pedi said it's normal as long as she's not turning blue. I re-enacted the noise for him at her 2 month check up because it totally freaked me out. She has since grown out of it and doesn't do it at all really anymore.

  • Lyla has been doing the same thing- usually when she is in the backseat and I'm driving. Gives me a heart attack every time!

  • Mine does this and the first time it freaked me out, but it is just her experimenting with noises. She does it when she gets excited mostly - sort of GASP! Look at that toy. It is scary, but if the baby doesn't seem upset or scared by it I doubt it is anything to worry about.
  • Thanks everyone! You made me feel a lot better :) Happy Saturday.
