Main meal: Honeybaked ham, potatoes au gratin made by me. Other family are contributing sweet potato casserole, zucchini casserole, and hopefully another vegetable side. I will also probably make sourdough rolls.
Dessert: Apple pie, made by my mom (they will be staying with us). Other family is bringing pumpkin pie.
Drinks: not sure yet. Probably just wine, Martinelli's, soda, milk, etc.
Separately, I am going to vent... because this just came up this week and it's on-topic.
So I decided to serve ham because I like ham and we never eat it and my family always served ham at Christmas. Well, for several years now, any time the topic of what meat to serve on Christmas has come up with my BIL/SIL (you know them by now), they always make it very clear that they like turkey over ham, turkey is the way to go, they just loove turkey. Great, fine. I know they are "ok" with ham but prefer turkey. But there are others at the dinner and so I didn't worry about it and my husband is good with ham too. Plus frankly I'm not crazy about cooking a turkey and making the gravy and all that.
So then this week SIL calls and says oh yeah, so you know my dad is working on his diet and he's basically becoming a vegetarian and doesn't eat pork anymore. So we are going to bring a turkey breast for him to eat, is that ok? He didn't want us to say anything, but i feel bad making him eat all sides. Of course I'm not going to say no, because I want him to be comfortable, but it's all highly suspicious because they have made such a huge STINK about how much they like turkey over ham. If it were anyone else I wouldn't suspect anything but they are such a*holes, that I was immediately suspicious. Anyway, so as soon as my BIL or SIL touch the turkey, my husband is going to give them a hard time about it. They are so awful sometimes.
I know I sound like a jerk, but if you knew them you would realize they are yes looking out for her dad, but also it's a convenient excuse for them to bring their own favorite main dish to Christmas. Also when I told SIL that MIL was bringing sweet potatoes, she said, oh no, we want to do that. We'll take that from her. And I was like, uh, ok you talk to her. So they told MIL that they were making it so she wouldn't do it. Nice.
Sorry, I know ... they get under my skin like nobody's business. As my husband and I have agreed, we have never met anyone like them in our lives... they may not sound horrible, but they pull some crappy stuff sometimes.
If he is "basically" a vegetarian, how the heck does turkey play into that? He should stick to the friggin' spinach dip (which sounds so delicious right now...).

All I know is that we are having prime rib. DH is a butcher and loves cooking them for Christmas. We all have dinner at my parents on Christmas day, but dh cooks it there. No idea what other sides though.

Yeah apparently he only eats poultry. He is not a fussy guy, this was her and her mom's request, not his. Convenient, I say.
Susan, sorry I hijacked your thread to biitch about my inlaws!

I want to make some kind of make-ahead breakfast casserole for Christmas morning that I can just pop in the oven before we begin presents. I made one last year that was egg/sausage based and it was just too "heavy." But DH doesn't like sweet stuff so a french toast casserole situation is out. I need to do some more research.

Christmas Eve we will be eating with my parents. My mom always fixes a roast, mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, green beans, one other veggie, and rolls. Dessert is pumpkin roll and a family dessert(not sure what it is called).
Christmas Day we will have lunch with my ILs. I am not sure what we are having this year. The last 2 years we have had chicken and rice, mac-n-cheese, vegetables(2), and broccoli cornbread. SIL makes mini cheesecakes with strawberry and chocolate drizzled on top.
We have dinner at my grandparents. It is "traditional" dinner. Turkey, ham or roast, mashed potatoes, dressing, green beans, corn, rolls. My grandma makes pumpkin pie, chocolate cream pie, and coconut cream pie.
We travel for Christmas and will be staying with my parents. My dad will make breakfast both mornings. One morning will be breakfast casserole and the other will be french toast or pancakes, eggs, sausage, and bacon.

I would personally think that "basically vegetarians" eat a lot of sides. One of my favorite meals is a "veggie plate" from our local cafeteria.
I'm sorry they are sucky. I'm glad your DH is on board with you!!
Christmas Eve we're doing appetizers and desserts. I want my BIL to make his spinach dip and a sopapilla cheesecake. Hmm, maybe I should get around to asking him, LOL but he has finals next week, so maybe after that is over. Then I want some chocolates and some peppermint bark. Then something with meat....I wish my BIL would make some pulled pork. LOL I can't have him cook everything, I will have to have a pow-wow and we'll discuss what he's willing to bring, haha.
Christmas Eve with the ILs: Appetizers...for dinner. Not even heavy, plentiful appetizers. We're talking chips and dip people
Um, my ILs pull this crap ALL.THE.TIME and they are always the ones that we stay with. It's always when I'm either very pregnant or nursing too, so I basically starve for the week that we go home. One night when I was nursing they served cheese and crackers for dinner, knowing that I couldn't eat dairy. It's not like they eat like birds regularly either, they're both very large people. I feel your pain.

Sorry, I also hijacked this post with a vent.
I'm used to it and expect it now. However, the 1st Christmas Eve away from my family I cried in the bathroom because I was so hungry and was just so out of my element. Now I just make sure to eat a meal before we go. I don't know if I could handle it though for an entire week!
Re: Poll:Christmas Meal Menus
Good question. I need some ideas.
Christmas day - we're hosting at our house, 15 people incl a baby and my 2 little ones
Appetizers: cheese tray + crackers, spinach dip + veggies

That all sounds about perfect. Nicely done, IMO. This gave me lots of ideas - thanks.
Exactly. Makes me crazy.
I agree, this sounds so good! Mushroom soup? Chocolate truffles with sea salt? Yummm.
Indeed. Ugh. I was a stress ball this week but I think we worked out the kinks. Let's see what else pops up. :P
