Babies: 6 - 9 Months

swollen gums when teething

When DS' bottom two teeth came in the gum swelled right where the tooth was coming in. Now he's working on his top teeth. None have poked through yet but his ENTIRE front of his top gums are so swollen and bumpy. I can pretty much see 6 distinct bumps from canine to canine. Do your LO's gums swell everywhere for 1 tooth? Or should I expect his teeth to come in rapid fire?

Re: swollen gums when teething

  • It sounds like he is in for a few at once. That's good news. At least it will be over with.

  • Thanks. I had to update because I got a peak in his mouth when he was eating and there are SIX from canine to canine, not 4. The poor guy won't let anyone near his mouth. He is obsessed with his pacifier lately, but seems like even his teething rings and sophie bother him. If you try and stick a finger in to feel he starts crying. He's been waking up hourly crying at night the past month and I figured they were bothering him, but then when I finally saw inside his mouth I felt so bad for him. :(

  • DS has two lower teeth and his top two (at least) are coming in and his gums are SO swollen. I feel so bad for him. I have tried everything to make him comfortable and have a teething necklace coming in.

  • Sounds like your lovebug needs a lot of cuddling. We had 5 teeth come in rapid-fire, and we did a lot of BFing, amber necklace-wearing, Hylands teething gel, and even baby Advil on the bad nights. I pretty much used things in that order, saving the advil (or whatever pain medicine you use) as a last resort.

In my routine, if D was up repeatedly like you mentioned, I would probably give him half a dose of advil.

    GL!
