Cross-post from the Breastfeeding board:
I am wondering if I am giving my 7 month old too much solid food
because I feel as though she is breastfeeding/getting less milk than
before and I don't know if it is because my supply is getting low or if
she is just full from her meals. Its hard to judge how much milk/ounces
she is getting from me, but she is nursing for only 5 or so minutes each
time during the day.
A typical day of solids for her is: 1/2
a banana for breakfast, 4 oz of yogurt mixed with fruit for lunch, 2 oz
of veg & 2 oz of fruit mixed with oatmeal for supper. All with
nursing (or 4 oz bottle if I am at work) before the food as well as on
demand through out the day and night.
How much solid food is your 6-8 month old eating?
Have you noticed a change in your supply since starting solids?
I should also mention that my supply has been steadily going down since I got my period at 7 weeks pp, started back to work 4 months ago and she started sleeping through the night a couple of weeks ago. I have tried fenugreek, a hospital grade pump and nursing/pumping extra with no boost in supply.
Any help / insight would be appreciated! TIA
Re: XP- Breastfeeding once baby has started solid food?
That sounds like a lot to me. At that age, they don't *need* solids- milk is still their primary source of nutrition. We're planning to do BLW and with that they say babies don't really start ingesting significant amounts of solids until 8-9 months. Your LO is getting 8+ oz of solids- that could definitely be a reason she is cutting back on milk.
Obviously the other things you mentioned will hurt your supply too. I think it wouldn't hurt to try cutting back on solids and see if it helps your nursing relationship. I don't mean to sound biased towards BLW, but you could offer her some table food and give her the choice to eat it or not.
Thank you for your reply!
I am interested in some aspects of BLW so I think I will try that. I know that I was trying to give her some more solids to fill her up a little more, but I think that it is hurting my supply even more.
Could you give me an example of what your LO eats in a day?
We haven't actually started yet (she's not quite 6 months!)
The book Baby Led Weaning is super informative. I also like this blog:

Ah, sorry, I didn't look at your siggy! Thanks for the link
This probably doesn't answer your question, but I think I would suggest just going with what your LO wants and not stressing too much about ounces, etc.
I have been experiencing a lot of what you are asking about -- I feel like my breasts are less full and I know DS is taking a lot less milk at DC that he was before he started solids. But I just offer him solids, let him eat what he wants, and nurse on demand. What more can you do? As long as baby is healthy and growing, you are doing great!
