Update on MMR/chicken pox vax reaction

A week or so ago, I posted asking about reactions to the MMR and chicken pox vaccines. Both kids got pretty bad rashes and had fevers of about 102 .

However, the worst part was that a few days after, DH got a fever and broke out in a rash. He went to the dr today, and he has chicken pox. It's a weakened form of it, but his face, hands, and feet are all covered in pox. He even had cpox as a kid, but is one of the "lucky" ones to get it twice.

So, moral of the story, you can get chicken pox from your kids' vaccine. It's rare, but it happens.

Re: Update on MMR/chicken pox vax reaction

  • Wow - that's really crappy luck.  How are the kids doing now?  Is your DH an itchy mess, or is it just more of a PITA to have the "weakened" form?

  • Oh no.  I hope your DH feels better.  My dad's doctor told him when his grandchildren get vaccinated for varicella he is not allowed around them for some amount of time (I can't remember the number) for this very reason since his immune system is partially compromised.  We're waiting till DD and DS are 10 to give them this vaccination.  I'll have to remember this for then.
  • The kids feel fine now, but still have the pox all over their face, so we won't be doing Santa pictures this weekend. DH is itchy but not too bad so far.
