Have you ever tasted jarred baby food?

I've been making my own baby food, but when we went out to dinner yesterday we decided to use some of the gerber bananas that MIL gave us (STFU MIL). I opened the container because I was only going to feed her half. DH was curious and licked the lid to see what it tasted like.

Then he made me try it. That was seriously gross! And it tasted nothing like bananas. Needless to say, I defrosted some squash and she ate that at the restaurant.

Re: Have you ever tasted jarred baby food?

  • Really?  I haven't tried the bananas but I have tried the peaches, pears and green beans from Gerber Nature Select and they tasted fine to me.  The peaches had a slight aftertaste that was a bit sourish tasting but that's all I noticed.

  • bananas are gross...agreed they don't taste like bananas...but everything else I've tasted is so good.  I taste because I warm her food up.  I like the sweet potatoes and peaches best :)
  • I agree the bananas are not good.  I think the other foods taste fine.  I actually really liked the prunes (weird, I know) and I used to eat my niece's peaches when I fed them to her.

If I may brag a bit, my homemade applesauce is much better than the jarred and LO likes fresh sweet potatoes more than jarred because he enjoys a little chunkiness sometimes.

  • I don't know about Gerber, we use Earths Best. I always try his food when I'm introducing something new and it always tastes like what it is.

  • I have only tasted the apples and it tasted just like applesauce to me...

    We give DS Gerber NatureSelect.

  • I tasted the bananas and thought the flavor was strange too, mine had added vitamin c and one other added ingredient. I was also wondering why there were no seeds inside?

I plan on making my own purees anyway, I just tried a jar last night in a desperate attempt to get LO to sleep better. I'm going to stick with the store bought for 3 days then try my own sweet potatoes.

  • We give DS Gerber foods (only veggies so far) and I have tasted them all (to check the temp mostly). They taste fine. I will have to see if the bananas are weird when we get to those.

  • We use earths best and I try just about everything I give him. Ive even tried the meats. Chicken and gravy tastes like chicken and gravy. It's all just very bland to us because we use spices and salts. I love the apples and apricots!

  • The bananas that come in the squeezie bag from Earth's Best taste just like bananas. Baby likes it, and I like it :)  Pears are about the same. Haven't tried anything else yet.

  • I used to eat banana baby food as a snack up through high school/college. It's yummy! I tried squash and it was gross.

  • I think all jarred baby food taste like crap...that's half the reason why I make my own food...it just tastes better.  I don't give a second thought to licking it off my hand but if it's jarred food I'm skeeved out by it.

  • I'm not against jarred food, I just rather make my own. Hannah loves bananas but she would not eat the gerber ones! Guess she thought they were gross too.
