Potty Training

I am about to lose my mind.

Seriously. For the past two days I have been literally going back and forth from the potty every thirty seconds for HOURS! DS will sit on the potty and do nothing for a few minutes, then get up, I am not exaggerating when I say maybe thirty seconds later I hear "POO POO! POTTY?!" he'll be dancing around and whining like he really has to go, so I'll stick him back on the potty. He's done this for probably three hours today, and this is all while also trying to take care of my 10 month old crawler. He doesn't have a problem going pee in the potty and I know he has to poop (he's very regular) and he's not constipated. Please, any advice would be greatly appreciated!

  • I so wish I had help to offer. My son was PT'd for pee for at least 5 months before he pooped in the potty at home. He would do it at daycare but not home. He actually changed his poop schedule to pooping at night (right at bedtime) so we would put him down for bed, leave the room, he would sh!t his pull-up, and get out of bed to play and wait for us to come in and change him. We just had to give it time. And lots of treats. We made the BIGGEST DEAL EVER out of the first little turd that hit the water at home. He got a new toy train (small one, but still). Good luck.

  • Sorry, no help here.  It took my oldest one night to decide he wanted to be potty trained.  We weren't even trying when he woke up dry and came to me all excited about having to go potty.  Then on he was set with no accidents.  My other boy took about 4 months of consistant reassurances to get there reliably.  He was scared though at an early age.  He had an asthma attack and we went to the ER.  While there he went to the bathroom and they had an automatic flush that was really really loud.  It flushed while he was on the toilet and after that, flushing the toilet and the toilet in general scared him for a long time.
  • He actually did go poop in the potty yesterday (finally) after all the hours of back and forth, and he hasn't had a pee accident in days. I've been super encouraging and made a big goof ball of myself dancing singing and shouting praises when he did go yesterday.

  • Give him a warm bath and have the potty nearby.  He's already naked and probably won't want to go in the bathtub so he'll hop out and let loose. That worked for DS1 when we were potty training.

Oh thanks! I'm going to try this tomorrow. He finally went around 7:30 tonight when I had him sitting on it while eating dinner LOL. Ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

  • DS is usually very regular, twice a day pooper. Since we started PT he had been a day and a half without pooping. I expected it in his diaper at night, but it didn't come. The next morning I fed him oatmeal and prunes and about an hour later he pooped on the potty. In reality it probably had very little to do with the oatmeal and prunes, but hey, it could have helped.

  • I know it took my daughter about 3 weeks to figure out what was the sensation of having to go poop and what was just gas. It just took practice and time, and in the meantime, we'd have 3 or so false alarms a day.

He may be just a little on the young side to tell the difference without a lot of practice.
