Space heaters?

I was wondering if anybody could recommend any SAFE space heaters? My husband things the oil ones are the safest...(looks like a radiator). I called the fire dept. to get some recommendations, but he couldn't help me.

Re: Space heaters?

  • They said they can't endorse any space hearters, but to just follow the manufactures instructions. They scare me too. I wouldn't even be considering one, but I had to close the vent to our LO's rooms becasue there is an odor coming from the vent, and I don't know what it is. So, until my husband gets back into town, I didn't want to take the chance of our LO breathing anything unsafe. I tried to move his crib into another room, but it wouldn't fit through the door. I would put him in his pack-n-play, but he never sleeps good in anything but his crib. :-( I leave his door open at night, but not during his naps.

  • We have one that looks like a radiator. I love it. I make sure that  I follow the instructions, and we never use it at night.

  • We have one that we keep in DD's room, but it's only turned on to warm her room up while she's in the bath so she doesn't turn blue when we're drying her off.

We never, ever keep it on while she's sleeping.

  • We also have one that looks like a radiator, like this, we have 2 actually, one in each child's bedroom, and they are oil filled and very safe. We have it plugged in to a digital thermostat that has a timer. They turn on about an hour before bed and turn off at a set time in the morning. The thermostat is set to 70 degrees and clicks the heater off if it gets above that in the room. We did a ton of research and made sure we had the safest ones with the best digital timer (bought separately). The reason we do this is because our bedroom is downstairs and most of our sq. feet is upstairs and we don't want to heat the whole upstairs, we just need heat in their rooms.

ETA: We are going on 2 years of using these and never had any issues, we also used one in our bedroom until we had DS and moved it up to his room.

Also-our extra plugged in thermostat detects the heat in the whole room, it is separate from the one in the heater. We do have our house heat to kick in at a certain temp if it dips to look, so the extra thermostat can detect if the room is too hot/cold so there is no chance of the room getting too hot.

  • we have one very similar to this- made by the living well company, infrared heater.  they don't get hot to the touch so they are safe for kids and pets. it has a thermostat so it goes on and off on its own.  i love it.  works great to heat a giant space- 1000 sq. feet.

  • We have an Edenpure heater. It runs all night long in the hallway (we have a ranch). So it warms up my bedroom, and DS bedroom, the bathroom and spare bedroom.  It's been working out so far, especially because I don't have to put the electric heat on directly in DS room.

  • We also use the Eden Pure infrared heaters. They are a bit pricey, but they work wonderfully and it keeps down on the cost of heating the house. They don't get hot to the touch, so they won't burn LO. We have one in each room.
