Do you stay up late when you're tired?

I'm in a rut again.  This is not new but I'm wondering if I'm the only one who does this.

I work a bit at night (with the holidays 2-3 nights a week).  I get home at 10:30.  Then I stay up until 12:30 to wind down.  This I can't avoid.  It's how I'm wired.

But then the next day I'm tired and tense and short tempered.  Fine.  Then that NIGHT I am all wired from my crappy day.  So I stay up late again relaxing/unwinding/getting some alone time.

So now I'm chronically sleep deprived.  Consistently snappy/unreasonable.

I need to put a timer on my computer.  go.to.bed.

Re: Do you stay up late when you're tired?

  • This is exactly how I am.  Once the kids are in bed, I'll usually do a few things around the house or spend a little time with my dh.  Then when he goes to bed I go down to work for a bit.  When I get my tasks done for the day, I'll then go up and turn on the tv.  I really should just go to bed, but I feel like I need to just sit down and unwind with some time to myself.  So then I end up staying up until 1 am watching mindless stuff on the tv and I'm exhausted the next day.  I actually feel like I get a second wind when I get off the computer from working at 11:30-ish and I don't feel tired, even though I know if I just went to bed I'd probably fall asleep.

  • Yup.  I swear, if I just consistently got 9-10 hours of sleep a night, I would be a new woman.

    But I don't.

Add in the fact that I drink (to the point of buzz) about 3-4 nights a week and when I am "sleeping" on those nights, it's not quality.

The damage I do to myself is amazing!  ;)

  • I generally have a window of going to sleep, and if I miss that window I tend to be up late.

I am a natural early riser, the kids rarely wake me up, I do not use an alarm.  So going to bed after 11 is a disaster for me.

I go through periods where I will go to bed shortly after the kids putting me asleep before 9.  It is recharging and refreshing.  I feel sorry for my H who is a night owl but I gotta take care of my own needs.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • Yes, I do this all the time. I have gotten a little better since being pg. DH usually goes to bed by 10/10:30. I will stay up until 12:30, this week it has been closer 1. :(

I know I should go to bed, but it is just so nice to have that interrupted time to get things done or veg out.

yes I do sleep better since I quit drinking but 6 hours (nursing a baby on and off) is NOT ENOUGH!!  9-10 hours would be amazing.  I did that when K was tiny.

  • I have to get up at 5 for work and I still go to bed at the same time I did as a sahm (10-11pm).  I really need more sleep!  It doesn't help that dh wants me to stay up with him.  Sometimes I can catch up with a 20 min nap while dd is napping in the afternoon and ds is watching a show.  Can you unwind by reading or something calm?  I know tv keeps me up but a book (unless really good) knocks me out, lol.

Can you drink/do something to help you relax and sleepy?

Probably not the best advice (lol) but something like a wine cooler or a beer to sort or ease yourself into sleep. Or even warm decaf tea or something to make you cozy? I also find reading makes me tired. Are you dimming lights/sound? maybe you just need some outside influences to help you. But stay off computer/internet etc. I also would not put on a long movie or anything like that. If you watch a little TV make it a sitcom or 2. The computer only makes things worse IMO.

So instead of 2 hours of unwinding time maybe it could be shortened to 30-45 minutes. Good luck

the computer is definitely a problem!  I catch up w/my day.  you are right if I turned it off it wouldn't take me 2 hrs.

  • Ugh I'm the same. No matter how tired I am, I still stay up. I think it's part "I can't tear away from computer" and part "kiddo is in bed, the house is quiet.. this is niiiice" <-- I don't like that to end!  I'm perpetually tired, and coffee is my buddy.

  • I am chronically sleep deprived because my kid doesn't sleep.  But, like you, I stay up late.  Although late for me is more like 10pm.  It's just that I should go to bed at like 8pm to get more sleep and be more on his schedule.  DS still wakes up multiple times a night.  I also get wired when I'm really sleep deprived though, so even when I try to go to bed earlier or take a nap, I can't fall asleep.

My 2 big kids nursed multiple times a night until I weaned them (22 mos.. 20 mos).  Now they both in their own beds all night (they slept full time with me until 2ish).  Have hope!

  • It's the story of my life unfortunately. I am a night person. I work evenings 3-4 nights a week and don't get home until 12am and typically not asleep until 2am. On my nights off I try to be asleep by midnight or so. If only the kids would sleep until 10am then I would be set ;)

  • Yes, I do, why do I do that?!  Definitely my computer addiction is part of it.  Also I like to watch obnoxious tv late at night; Colbert, Teen Mom, Chelsea, etc.
    .
  • Right now, I have to.  I do pretty well on 6-7 hours a night, but I'm not getting even half that right now.  Between work, the baby's teething/sleep regression/intent on driving me batty, and the holidays, I don't have a choice.  When I do tell myself, "enough is enough," and I go to bed at a reasonable time (usually midnight), I have NO trouble falling asleep.  For me, sleeping is unwinding.

Thanks!  We sound a lot alike.  DS still nurses multiple times a night too.  And he sleeps with us most of the time as well.  Hopefully it will get better soon :)
