Did you swim while pregnant?

I'm entering my second tri and my energy's coming back so I'm ready to get back in the pool.  Did any of you swim while pregnant?  I've read a lot that says swimming is awesome exercise while pregnant, but have also read some warnings against coming into contact with chlorinated pools while pregnant.  I am hoping a few of you will be able to tell me you swam consistently throughout your pregnancy and had healthy, normal babies.  Maybe it even helped you during labor and after the baby came?  Just looking for some piece of mind--I'd be swimming in a chlorinated indoor pool.

Re: Did you swim while pregnant?

  • I swam while I was pregnant as well.  It felt so good and helped with all the pressure from my belly and helped with my sore back.  My baby was born healthy!

  • Um, I was pregnant during a record breaking summer. We're talking 115 degrees. Swimming was my only relief!! And toward the end it was really nice because it took some of the pressure off my joints.

  • I did water aerobics twice a week until the very end.
  • I swam. Rather, I submerged myself neck-high in deliciously cool water during a July and august full of 100+ degree days! It was heavenly to float around and have a relief from the heavy belly and just relaxxxxx my body. Getting out was always such a drag as soon as you hoisted yourself up the ladder and gravity welcomed you back!

  • I swam several times over the summer. My doctor said it was totally fine. Go for it!

  • Yes and it was marvelous! It helps alleviate joint pain and keep you limber.

Just be careful getting in and out of the pool!

  • Being in my thrid trimester through out the very hot summer months I swam as much as I could. It was wonderfull relief from all the pressure and weight I had gained. I gained a lot of weight and my OB highly recomended swimming to me to help relieve some of the issues and pain I was having. She said as long as I didn't think my water had broken I could swim as much as I wanted to. My baby is healthy and happy and all the time I spent in the pool didn't make a difference at all in the end. I remember LO would either start kicking as soon as I got in the water or stop moving it was strange the first time. But, there were never any issues from it.

  • I swam at the pool my entire 1st tri. Then when it became summer, I switched to the ocean and swam at  the beach for the rest of my pregnancy. Swimming is fine and will not hurt your baby-- there's no way for the chlorine to enter the embryonic sack and the amounts your body absorbs are harmless, otherwise, no one would swim in pools!

  • I swam 2-3 times a week during my 2nd and 3rd tri and I really think that is why I didn't have any of the typical pregnancy aches and pains.  It also was nice to feel lighter for a bit in the water and not feel the weight of my belly.  I had the strength to get through a long labor and had a healthy 9 lb 2 oz boy!  If you aren't a swimmer, just take it slow to start out with.  I mixed up swimming laps with running or walking the length of the pool (it was only 4 1/2 feet deep at my gym).  GL!

  • I swam a lot! It felt so good! Helped with all the aches and pains and kept the swelling down. It was too hot most days to go for a walk outside or anything so I live in the pool on base for the last 2 months of my pregnancy! Had a healthy baby girl mid July!
