Babies: 6 - 9 Months

How long does your LO's cold last? I need sleep...

I was wondering how long you lo's cold has lasted if they have been sick.? My baby (7 months old) has had cold since Monday and hegoes from runny nose to stuffy... He is waking b/c he cant breathe well I have tried everything.. Vicks plug-in's, vaporizer, hot shower, tylenol, motrin, boogie wipes, saline mist, the aspirator frieda one too... Any clue how long this will last? The night is the problem I feel so bad for him.. I have tried to incline crib too, that works a little if he is stikll and that rarely is the case. My husband has been sleeping in the chair with him upright. I just wonder when this be better? (and any other remedies natural that can help him breathe at night when laying down.. I wish he could use the nasal spray I use, but I know he cant.. TIA!

  • My daughters last cold lasted for about a week and a half. She never ran a fever, and never started pulling on her ears, so we just waited it out. Bad news is I have it now, and I've had it since Thanksgiving. Make sure to do everything to keep yourself healthy too or you'll go a solid month without sleep :)

  • 7-10 days is the normal timeframe for a cold.  Have you elevated LO's mattress?  We do that when she has a cold, as well as use saline, and suction out her nose frequently.

Otherwise, there's not much you can do. Colds suck!

  • Can I ask what you guys are using to elevate the crib mattress?  My LO is on day 2 of her cold and I feel so bad for her at night.  She is so congested....we are using Vicks baby rub and sucking her nose w that Graco snot sucker, but she obv still wakes up stuffed up.  Thx!!

  • I've heard that the mattress can be raised by putting a rolled towel or blanket UNDERNEATH the mattress, so baby's head is slightly higher than baby's feet.

Thank you!  I think we will be trying this tonight and see if that helps!!

  • DD has only had one cold, but it lasted about a week and a half. It sounds like you are doing all the right things. Just keep him as comfortable as possible until he starts feeling better.

  • I am with you. She just got off antibiotics last month and now we have a cold again. I have been having to go give her nose drops at night and hold her upright some because she coughs too much and it wakes her up. Not fun. It's been going on for a week and our pedi said if it isn't better Monday she'll probably call in another prescription. Not sure I want her on antibiotics that much but anyway, I feel your sleepless pain! So maybe give it a few more days and then call the doctor!

  • Poor thing, I can relate our baby (7.5 months) just got over back to back colds I feel like we've been sick for nearly a month. I heard this remedy towards the end of her cold so I can't be sure it was it that helped but my friend swears by it -- put vicks vapor rub on your babys feet before sleeping, then cover with socks/footed pjs. Maybe just an old wives tale but nothing wrong with giving it a try.
  • I was told to put DS in the swing or his car seat to sleep since it is more up right. I know a lot of people don't feel comfortable with it. It sort of depends on your baby.
  • My DS has had his cold for almost two weeks now. I took him to the dr last week to get him checked because he began vomitting. He was fine and we just have to wait for it to pass because he has mucous built up and it is dripping into his throat and tummy and irritating him. he sleeps through the night and all still but he now likes to be held to go to sleep and he were just getting him to start going down by himself at night. But the dr told me to do the saline solution and then use the sucker to get anything we can out. This seems to be helping him out. His tummy doesn't seem to be as irritated. Colds stink and with us two we have been going back and forth giving it to each other, but thankfully things seem to be getting back to normal. It stinks because it is such a waiting game.
