Babies: 9 - 12 Months

6 Month Nap Help :(

Help, my ds will not take longer than a 30-40 min nap in his crib.  He sleeps great at night (about 11-12 hrs) but I know he needs to rest during the day.  I feel like I have tried everything.  I am not so great with letting him cry for a bit when he wakes up to see if he will put himself back to sleep. Should I resort to this, and if so, how long do I let him cry before I go in to soothe him.  He has been taking about 3 cat naps during the day, which still does not provide him with enough sleep.  This morning I tried pushing his morning nap later hoping his afternoon nap will be later and longer.

Advice is greatly appreciated!!

Re: 6 Month Nap Help :(

  • Does he seem tired when he wakes up from his naps like I still needs more sleep? DS never took long naps during the day but would make up for it at night by sleeping 11 hours. Maybe he just doesn't require long naps during the day since he is sleeping so well at night.

  • It sounds like he might be overtired and may need to take his nap sooner not later.  I've started putting Arlo down at the very FIRST signs of tiredness (decreased activity, looking away, slouched shoulders, ect.  NOT rubbing eyes, yawning, irritability, these are all signs of being overtired).  It helps a bunch and he tends to sleep longer when he's not overtired.  I also let him fuss in his crib to help soothe himself to sleep, but once he starts crying I go in and soothe him.
  • Until my dd was 7 months, her naps were only 30-45 min long each & she took 3 a day.  But like your ds, slept 12 hrs at night.  Around 7 months I realized that she would take 1.5hr nap if I waited an extra 1/2 hour before putting her down for her nap. I guess she just needed to be extra tired or something.  And now she only takes 2 naps a day, 1.5 hrs each.

When dd would cry, I would let her cry for 5-10 minutes and go get her if she didn't fall back to sleep.
