If you had the Cystic Fibrosis screening done...

How much did you pay?

I just got the bill.  My (previous) doctor charged $800, my insurance paid $250, and now I'm stuck with a $550 bill.  I am FURIOUS.  I realize I should have asked how much it would cost before I agreed to the test, but this seems excessive and they should have told me how much it cost beforehand.  Honestly, when I agreed to it I was signing a whole bunch of paperwork that the midwife laid out in front of me and I was feeling a bit pressured and like there was no time to ask questions.

  • Mine was also hundreds of dollars, which wasn't explained to me before it was given. Seriously though, it's an important test. I'm still glad I had it done.

  • I'm no help, I am military and got it done for free. But that seems really high for just a blood test.

  • I just got my paperwork yesterday and they told me my insurance would not cover much if anything of it.  They cover the quad but not CF.

  • Ours was covered so I'm not sure what the total was.  I do remember getting the paperwork for the NT scan and Cystic Fibrosis test and being told that these were elective tests so I should check with my insurance to see if they are covered.

  • OMG! That is insane!

Mine was covered >_< but I thought it was a pretty standard test if you fit the catagory to need it...

I would at least consider talking to the insurance company and finding out why it is not fully covered.

  • My insurance paid half, but the lab company billed $2066.00.  I still have not received a bill from them and I had the testing done in October.  I hope I dont have to pay the full balance!
  • I'm sorry to hear that - - that's a lot.  Mine, thankfully was covered by insurance when I was PG with DD.

  • I was offered it at my very first appointment but was told before I signed the consent that about 30% of the time insurance companies don't cover it so I may want to call them first to check. I opted out. She said it is a $600 test.
  • ok you are making me panic. I havent seen the bill yet and i might start hyperventilating. That is a lot for a blood draw.

  • I am no help also. I got my labs done at my hospital where I work, and all my labs are covered. So no bill for me.

Got my results in a week. Very happy to say we are negative and low risk for everything else. Good to get some great news!

  • After my first appointment I was sent for lab work. Quest took 6 vials of blood from me and a few weeks go when I checked my mailbox I saw a bill for $862.91. I am livid. I called my insurance and they explained the original bill was over $1600, so they covered 1/2 of it. But I am still left with a ridiculous bill.

If I had known these tests were optional, I definitely would have opted out.

  • I just got the bill from Quest for my 8 week blood work last week and laughed when I opened it ( only because insurance covered it all) ---- it was $3,000!!!!!

My doctor checked for everything under the sun ...I swear they took about 10-12 vials. I think the CF test was $1,038 but there's another itemized screening for $550....crazzzyyyy!

  • I have 13 vials taken (highest of the month!) and the charge was $2603 (I just checled my insurance claims). I have no family history because I had a closed adoption and they tested me for everything under the sun. Turns out I am a CF carrier. They tested H, too. I wonder how much his cost.

Just for the CF test, our insurance was charged $650.

  • Why would it not be a responsibility to let the person you are pushing a test on know how much it will cost?  That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.  It would be like saying you should go shop for a cell phone and the sales rep tell you what the standards are for a smart phone but not how much they will charge you for the phone itself and the plan.  Or going out to eat without knowing what the meal price is.  For first time mom's or just a person that doesn't know anything about screening tests they trust in that person to suggest things they may need.....and if already pregnant cystic fibrosis is almost pointless because the baby has already been conceived.  It would be nice to know that insurance may not cover it or that it will cost $800 plus.
  • Lurking from May 2013 Mom board...

I'm a CF carrier as I found out after my first apppointment with this pregnancy.  My blood test was a part of several blood tests (6 vials I think, including a test for HIV) and the total bill (on a high deductible insurance plan) was about $300 that I had to cover.  The only thing I KNEW I was being tested for was HIV and that was because I had to sign a consent form.

When we tested DH though, he was only tested for CF (due to my result as a carrier) and we had to pay about $800 out of pocket.  While the test results did give us piece of mind (he was negative), it certainly hurt the finances.  I just don't get why testing me for several things was only $300 and testing  him for one thing was $800.  I'm going to call the insurance company this week to get answers.
