January 2012 Moms

December or January??

I am 36wks and baby is full Breech.

At today's appt my doctor wanted to to schedule a C Section one week before my due date..But I said I want to wait until the due date..

Are breech babies more likely to be preemies?

Doesn't it make more sense to have the LO when he's actually 'ready' to come?

So its either Dec 28th or January 6th for me. Tongue Tied

Re: December or January??

  • WOW!  My DH would be insisting on Dec 28th because of the tax deductions (not sure if Canada has the same benefits).

They say the longer they stay in there, the better, right?  I'd pick the 6th.. most of the best hockey players are born in January!

  • I definately think it's better to wait until the due date to get a c-section.  Breech or not, baby benefits from that last week in the womb.  Your Dr may be trying to schedule a week early because they're afraid you'll go into labor

Also, from what I've heard, 36 weeks is enough time for the baby to turn.  spinningbabies.com is a site that gets posted a lot.  Worst case scenario though, you go into labor with the baby still breech, and you get a c-section anyway.  I think it's worth the wait to see if LO will flip.

  • haha YES we do get the tax benefit, but I'd rather have him just a tad bit healthy.

My only worry about waiting until the 6th possibly, is that I dont want to go into natrual labor where I dialate a lot and add to the pain down there.

Ill let DH know about the hockey luck in Jan; I think he's already been shopping around for skates haha

  • I think it's worth the wait to see if your baby will flip.  There's still a chance.  Plus, I think I'd rather go into labor and then have a c-section.  I feel like I've known people with scheduled c-sections who had trouble breastfeeding moreso than friends who went into labor on their own and then ended up having c-sections.  I don't know if their bodies were more prepared to breastfeed because of the hormones or what, but for me, that would also be a concern.

  • My friends who have had scheduled c/s because of breech babies or because of repeat c/s have all been before their EDD but after 39 weeks because the Drs don't want you to go into labor on your own. IMO, controlled environments are better, especially when surgery in involved.

FWIW, my daughter was born at 38 weeks and was 100% totally healthy.

  • A preemie is born before 37 weeks, so the baby wouldn't be a preemie.

  • As a PP said, you still have time for LO to flip.  Some babies flip just before or even during labor.  www.spinningbabies.com has lots of good info and techniques on getting babies to turn so it's totally worth checking out.

I agree. I'd probably wait as long as possible, assuming the baby is ok!

  • I think the reason they try to schedule C/S earlier than your due date is because in the event that you go in to labor on your own, and you don't make it to the hospital in time or something else happens, the baby could be in major danger. If they schedule a C/S the dangers are much less likely because they are scheduled and controlled. KWIM?

I have had two breech babies so yes, yikes TWO c-sections!  Also both of my c-sections we great experiences and my recovery was awesome!

My first was born at 37 weeks 6 days and was 100% totally healthy also.  My second was a preemie (born 31 weeks 6days), but it had nothing to do with the fact that she was breech - I had other issues.  She is now home and doing fantastic so a baby being breech has nothing to do with a baby being a preemie.  Also, if they schedule a c-section they cannot do it before 38 weeks in the states (not sure about Canada) so the baby would be full term as 37 weeks they consider full term.
