My four year old daughter has never been to the dentist. We regularly brushed, but didn't floss (could not for the life of me figure out how to floss such a teeny mouth with my big hands) and both of us were scared out of our minds. I was scared that DD and DS had inherited my crappy teeth (I've had probably five root canals and countless fillings)- and DD is just naturally anxious.
We went to a pediatric dentist who a friend recommended and oh my gosh. *I* want to go there!! The minute we walked in, I relaxed. They had a train table, a cute movie playing, and the entire office staff was so nice. The hygenist came out and took us on a tour of the office and then took the next ten minutes to show the kids exactly what tools she would use and what they did. DD relaxed, DS was fine, and the whole cleaning took about ten minutes. No tears at all. And I was beyond thrilled to find out that both kids have no cavities (yay for getting DH's teeth!) and after the examination by the dentist (who was amazing too), they were given a balloon, goody bag (with a sugar free lollipop, flosser, floss, toothbrush, toothpaste and stickers) and a toy from the treasure chest. They walked out of there looking like they had just come from a birthday party. It was amazing. They even had the movie playing on screens above the dentist chairs so the kids could watch it if they wanted too. DD actually said she liked going to the dentist! It was such a great first experience for both of them and I doubt they will be worried about going again next time. Yay!!
Re: I finally took the kids to a dentist! :-)
Sounds alot like my daughter's dentist's office! She's an old friend from high school and my daughter loves going because she shows her my old pictures. She always asks when we're going back.
Glad to hear your kids' first time was a good experience; it sets the tone for all future visits, I believe.
