3rd Trimester

Anyone having a non-stress test?

My doctor said they will do a non-stress test. I have never heard of this before. I googled it and found out they are just going placing a fetal monitor on me for a while. I am still not sure why they are doing the test, besides just checking her moments. Anyone know?

Re: Anyone having a non-stress test?

  • I actually had one done yesterday because during an ultrasound his heart rate dropped for more than 60 seconds, so I got sent to L&D for a non-stress test.  They will just be monitoring you for contractions and the baby's heart rate.  In 3 weeks, however, I will being doing them weekly until he gets here, along with biophysicalprofiles.  I have GD so they're monitoring baby really close.  The NST and BPP are just to make sure he is tolerating being in there and that he is growing like he should, not too much and not too little.

  • I would want to know why...

I had them weekly for pre-e and then had the monitors on for 4 days in the hospital during my bed rest...

  • I would call and ask why.  I've had 3, along with BPPs, due to possible pre-e.

  • I've been having them every week since about 30 weeks or so because I was measuring behind and they are monitoring me for IUGR vs. SGA

  • I am having them 2x week in the last month, because I am over 35 yrs old. This granny-mama has 2 sensors put on her belly, hooked up to what looks like a seismograph machine that measures earthquakes. One measures heartbeat (making sure that if fluctuates appropriately over a span of time) and the other detects movement (i.e during BH contraction, etc.). Absolutely painless and gives me 30 minutes to read magazines.

    Also, complimentary cranberry juice.  :)

  • Thank you all for the explaination. These explainations help with the why in my case. I have GD and my bs has not been controled. I have tried everything, but the numbers will not come down. The endo and OB has been taking what the next steps will be since the insulin and diet are not working. They decided it is best to get the baby out at extactly 37 weeeks. I went into today for a steroid shot and I have a second one tomorrow along with the non stress test. I was also high risk from the beginning anyways and the GD is just adding to it. I am scheduled for a csection on Wednesday.
