OK---one more post! Can I, as a size 12 and 20 lbs overweight, wear skinny jeans? If so, do I wear a long shirt over the top to cover my huge thighs and rear?
I vote yes, depending on the type of jean. Darker wash jeans are better - and I like to wear mine with boots b/c I think it balances the proportions. I dont think I could go out in public just in skinny jeans and flats. . .
I like wearing longer cardis to cover my butt, or a long sweater/tunic. I'm a size 10 , super curvy, and short for reference . . . Joe Jean skinnies are my favorite (found on sale at Nordstrom Rack!). I also like the ones from Gap, but ended up with Joes instead.

I am about a 12 and had a pair. IMHO they looked awesome. I wore them with boots though, and definitely had a long-ish shirt to cover my "problem" areas
Yes. Get well-structured skinny jeans-- not the super-stretchy type that don't help anyone. Don't have a too-oversized top, or it will give you an apple shape. I would do a longer shirt, one that hits probably mid-butt or a little higher. Maybe something like a tee or tank layered with a thicker sweater.
I would look for a pair of high-waisted skinny pants and treat them like leggings. Wear a beautiful sweater wrap and some riding boots and you'll look like a million bucks. As long as you've got generous length and fabric up top, you're good to go. I also think boots provide a good counter-balance, whereas little flats can make me feel like I've got pig hooves in contrast with my thighs and waist. Do it!
i love this post and am eager to hear the responses. recently, i bought a pair of straight leg jeans, which feel like skinny jeans to me since i've basically worn bootcut for the last 8 years. i don't feel 100% comfortable in them yet because i think they make my thighs and butt look huge.
Yes. I think anybody can pull them off if you pair it with the proper top and shoes. I too despise skinny jeans with flats. So I wear them with boots or heels if I want to dress them up. I honestly don't think I can ever wear regular jeans ever again because I just love my skinnies.
This!!! I was very reluctant for a long time until my fashion savvy friend suggested I get some!!! I love em!

You described my size as well, 12 with 20 lbs to lose. I agree with this totally, especially the bold.

I got mine at Old Navy. They're the Sweetheart Skinny jeans. I like them when I first put them on, but they do stretch a little too much after wearing them all day. But I'm not willing to spend more money on skinny jeans since for me they have limited wearability.

I also have the Sweetheart Skinny jeans from Old Navy. They were recommended here last year and fit the budget. I also wear them with boots. I personally think my body shape would look silly with skinny jeans and flats. I have wide-calves and thin ankles so it just doesn't flow right to have big legs and small feet, IMO.
I have this pair from Lands End Canvas and love them. Based on the reviews, I ordered up one size, and they fit me really well. They are slim fit, so skinny enough to tuck into boots, but they aren't skin tight. Bonus - they're on sale for about $17 right now.

Wish they had some taller options.

The best pair I found were way too short, but you can't tell since I wear them with boots

I say yes, because you sound like you're about my size I have the Old Navy Maternity Jeggings and they're insanely flattering. I wear 'em with boots and a longish top, usually one that comes to either mid-butt or just slightly below.

FCB, where would I buy well-structured skinny jeans? I'm shopping challenged.
Definitely. I'm the same size and found some for cheap at Target.
I even wore 'em for our family pics, if you want to see how they look. Link.

(re: where to buy skinnies)
I prefer Lucky, and I have some Joes that are incredible, but I'm not the same shape.
I have some JAG skinnies (via TJMaxx) that are too stretchy and make my ass look like a whale.
Wish they had some taller options.
