Do you dress your kids for style or comfort

I always thought that when I had kids I would want to dress them like little adults.  However my son spends his time running around, playing on the floor, etc.  Most of the time I dress him in sweatpants and a t-shirt.  I figure that's what I'm the most comfortable in so he probably is as well.  When I take him to the gym or a class almost every other child there is in a dress or nice pants.

Re: Do you dress your kids for style or comfort

  • Comfort! DS rarely wears jeans. I only dress him in "uncomfortable" clothes when we go somewhere special. Even then I try to put him in soft sweaters & stuff like that.

  • Both but I think comfort should be first priority.  We put DS in brands we like if we can find them. I love H&M clothes!! However, if something feels scratchy or seems like it wouldn't move with him, I don't buy it. The most uncomfortable thing I've had him in was his Easter outfit. It was a linen shirt and seersucker pants with a bowtie. By the end of our meal, he was in a onesie, his pants rolled up at the ankle and bare feet!

  • Both.  I want her to be comfy, but I can't stand it when she's not stylish.  Even just around the house.  It's a hang-up I have.  Dumb, I know.
  • Whatever is easier - meaning that my 7 year old has to wear gym shoes for gym - or bring gym shoes and change into them.  I know her and she would hate to change her shoes everyday so she never wears dresses or outfits with leggings which are popular now because of the shoes.  And she prefers jeans to sweat pants.  My son goes to daycare and I normally dress him in sweatpants which are more comfortable and easier for diaper changes.

  • Comfort, unless we're going to do something special.

  • Definitely comfort around the house. I try to have them in cuter clothes when out, but it's not dresses or anything.

  • Both. Gap pants have cotton inside. His usual outfit is gap pants, t-shirt with a henley over.

  • Totally comfort. The only time they've ever worn jeans was on Thanksgiving. (And they looked adorable!) Although they'll be starting at a daycare center in January, and when we went to visit, EVERY kid was wearing jeans. Uh, we only own one pair per kid, so I guess we'll have to get some for Christmas.

  • Both, though when we are home I strictly do comfort. I don't even care if she matches at home as long as she is comfortable. She has designated "play" clothes and "going out" clothes. Her play clothes are just cotton pants and tops, and going out clothes are dresses or matching sets.
  • I strive to find the best of both worlds. I don't walk around in sweat pants and a T shirt- even though it's comfy its not really appropiate outside of your house.  DD is almost always in leggins and tunics with mary janes and a matching hair bow- that is her staple outfit. It's comfy yet it looks cute. I also like the skirts with the leggins attached from Gap Kids- again the are cotton with some stretch and are comfy yet cute.

DD will wear jeans or cords every once in awhile, but really on little girls there are much cuter things then jeans. She also wears a lot of smocked dresses and knit dresses- which are super comfy- with socks and mary janes- no tights.

  • pants usually consist of jeans/cords/khakis etc and shirts are generally long sleeved tees. i dont do sweaters, dresses that require tights/leggings etc. usually we shop at old navy. she has a few carters outfits that still fit that are cotton pants which she may wear on the weekend.

i am soooo not the mom that buys an easter dress or a christmas dress. my sister bought LO an easter dress and my mom bought her a christmas dress. i just cant see spending x amount of dollars on something that she will wear for ONE day. the dress my mom got her for xmas this year was marked at $42 and im praying that she got it on sale from sears. now i have to buy tights and my mom said i need to get her shoes. no way in hell am i paying $20 for a pair of shoes that she will literallly wear for an hour (1/2 in the car each way).

  • Definitely comfort! His legs are so chubby that he can't really bend his legs in jeans. And I don't remember the last time I put him in them. He is usually wearing some sort of sweat pants and a shirt or mesh athletic pants... or a sweat outfit that goes together.

This.  I put E and M in cute clothes during the week when they go to DC (or "school", as we call it), and when we go out on the weekends, but I think they are still comfy.  If we're just hanging around the house on the weekend, they'll stay in PJs for as long as C and I are in our PJs.

Same here. I also always have them matching/coordinating. Even their sleepers. I've got issues.

I find dresses infinitely more comfortable than pants, so DD owns 99.9% dresses. If it's cold, we just put some leggings/legwarmers underneath.  DS exclusively wears overalls or other one-piece boy outfits. I hate pulling on pants. Snaps are so much easier.

  • Unless we are home DS is dressed like a "little man" in jeans or cargos and in the summer shorts and t's. Like a previous post I don't wear sweats in public and like to look nice. I have always been into my appearance and will be the mom at a play date getting asked if I have plans after because I am wearing a dress and flats.

Now if we are home we could spend the whole day in jammies.

  • Both.  But sometimes her "dress" clothes are a sweater tunic and leggings.  Looks cute but comfy as well.
  • When he goes to daycare or we are just lounging around the house, he dresses for comfort though I count jeans and cords in that equation. When we are out and about he's dressed for style.

This, and I'm OK with it.

  • I tend to dress him for comfort.  My DH loves to put him in jeans.  98% of the time it is sweat/cotton pants and t-shirts.

Haha, can you share some of that thinking with me...no matter how hard I try, I can't resist holiday clothes. However, I did get his saddle shoes at a consignment shop for $5 (though I would have spent $40 if I didn't find them cause I NEEDED them :)) but maybe you could look at a consignment shop for shoes that fit the bill?

  • Definitely comfort. She still wears cute stuff but I don't put her in dresses all the time.
Sometimes it's okay to follow. (Picture is a clicky)

  • Honestly....style. I'm also a big fan of boutique clothes, DS has 4 Christmas longalls. He also has 10 pairs of shoes in his current size. I do have a few Carter's fleece outfits that he wears when we are bumming it.

I don't think they look uncomfortable and I'm honestly more comfortable in slacks with a nice shirt than jeans and a t-shirt. The only thing he has an issue with is when I'm putting on/taking off a turtle neck. I only put him in his peter pan collar shirts on special occasions, so he wears a turtleneck with his longalls. He gets upset, but only because it takes longer to put on/take off.
  • If we're lounging around the house they wear whatever.

I am weird about not letting them out of the house in sweatpants (unless DS is going to soccer). They mostly just wear jeans and a t-shirt/button down/sweater...nothing too fancy.

  • Style more than comfort.  Even as a baby I would spend the time putting him in a button up shirt.  To me all of his clothes are still fairly comfortable, but I do make the effort, and to me sweat pants and cotton pants are for pjs not for going out.

He does have some stylish wind pant style pants but those are usually worn for appropriate occasions, ie. going to watch a triathlon/running race, going for a run with one of us.

He is the kid at daycare that the teachers constantly ask me where I get his clothes because he's always dressed well.  I do a lot of ebay and consignment shopping and find good deals.  He is definitely a much better dresser than I am.

  • Comfort. She wears jeans and t-shirts just like her Mommy.  I make sure she is in comfy jeans though. Nothing stiff.

  • I try to dress them comfortably stylish, ha ha ha. They each have one dressy outfit per season. Also, I don't put them in jeans until they can walk, either.

    DS1 - Feb 2008

    DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

  • I try to find a good balance between both. Even her really nice outfits have some level of comfort to them, meaning that I won't buy a dress or outfit unless it is something I would want to wear also.
Our first baby girl, Lucia Joy, joined us on April 1, 2010!
  • Mostly comfort.  She wears a lot of leggings with cotton/stretchy dresses or tunics, and stretchy pants with a top.  I rarely put her in jeans, because even the stretch fabric ones are not as stretchy as leggings or cotton pants, and they do restrict her when she's climbing on things.  She still looks nice and put together though, you can do comfort without being sloppy.  Of course, I do have dress clothes for her for special occasions.

  • We're home most of the time so I'm the weirdo that dresses their kid up to go to walmart.  But her stylish clothes are soft and stretchy so they're still comfy.

however long the night, dawn will break.
