VBAC

successful VBAC!(long)

Monday the 29th I had a dissapointing Dr appointment telling me that I was not dialated or effaced at all, even though I was 40 weeks. So I kinda noticed friday morning I was having strong braxton hicks about an hour apart most of the day, painful but not unbearable, but I blew them off.

My husband was making the 5 hour trek home from work when I noticed the contractions were getting closer together. I lost my mucus plug about 1 hour before My DH made it home. By the time he made it home contractions were ten minutes apart but I blew them off as braxton hicks as they would change in intensity depending on what I did.

So we went to bed at midnight, and my contractions kept me awake coming every 10 min, and then every 5 min for an hour! At  2 am I woke my husband and told him "it is time" . We called his mom who came at 3 am to watch our two boys who were sleeping (thank God for her!) By this time my contractions were still 5 min apart. We went to the hospital which was an hour drive, by the time we got to the hospital my contractions were 3 mins apart! After a quick check in and a internal check by the nurse, my contractions were only 1-2 min apart and I was dialated to 5cm, 80% effaced!  My Nurse called for an epidural as my doctor wanted me on one just in case of a repeat emergancy c-section. They gave it to me at 5 am and my contractions slowed back to every 4 min.

My doctor then came in at about 7 am and checked me and proceeded to break my water when he found me stalled dialated at 5 cm and 90% effaced. At 9 am  still no progress I was given the smallest dose of pitocin, and from there stuff started happening again. At 11:00 am I was told to start pushing, I gave it my all but was kind of frustrated they wouldn't let me push the way I wanted and had practiced. Still after 30 min Baby got "stuck" and my doctor decided to use a vacuum to assist the baby out. I was told if I could not push the baby out after this it would be another c-section! So I pushed with everything I had, and... no baby! So I took another deep breath and pushed again before the doctor could say anything, lol. He looked suprised and said "good good keep it going!" to my suprise! Two more pushes and my baby came into this world! While I did end up with a third degree tear, a lot of blood loss and a bad hemroid o.0, I wouldn't change a thing! This is day 4 of recovery for me and I would have to say this recovery is still much better than recovering from a c-section! Thanks for letting me share my story and good luck to all you ladies trying for your VBAC!

  • Congratulations!  Thanks for sharing your story.  With all the research on pushing positions, you would think they would let the Mom call the shots.

  • Congratulations! Sounds like you did a great job. I'll never understand why women are forced to deliver in a way that is easiest for everyone else rather than easiest for the woman in labor.
