swaddling or light blanket or sleep sack

what is your plan for night times at home? What has been recommended to you

Sids Canada recommends a sleep sack

My nursing student niece says that reseach says a light blanket is safest.

Re: swaddling or light blanket or sleep sack

  • I had the same question. I was thinking just a blanket, but then wasn't sure when to swaddle and when not to.

  • Swaddle for us.  No blanket for us until DD is able to get into a sitting position all by her self.

  • I would use a sleep sack or swaddler (like swaddle pod or woombie) that securely closes, I would not think of even a light blanket until baby is able to climb onto knees (whick is when the use of sleep sacks is not recommended.  Even then I would probably lean towards a blanket sleeper.

  • I have two sleep sacks and a few swaddle blankets. I'll see what the baby likes best.

I've heard blankets should be avoided.

  • all of them until I determine what LO likes

  • LO was swaddled in the hospital and then once we got home, I just use a blanket. I will use sleep sacks but I don't have any newborn size ones and the smalls are too big, it goes right over head. So I'll just wait till she gets bigger.

  • Our bedroom is always warm so I probably wont use anything .. I never have with my kids. Just a warm sleeper and that's it. I may put a light undershirt underneath if it's really cold. Both my first and second HATED being swaddled .. if they couldn't move their arms or get to their fists they'd freak out so it was pointless. As for blankets .. I've always heard not to use them and I'd personally lose sleep worrying that it would get overtop of their face.

  • We will be using a Sleep Sack and a Swaddling Sack...
  • I've been battling with this...to the point where DH thinks I'm crazy.

We live in country...have a somewhat drafty old house, and it will be bitter cold for LO's first few months. However, I've noticed the nursery stays pretty warm.

My mom thinks its "horrible" to put a baby to bed in the cold with no blanket...even though she understands the risk of SIDS. It's one of those "you kids made it fine back in the day" situations.

I don't plan on putting a blanket in with LO. But I do really question how I know LO is at a comfortable temperature.

I have light swaddles to start with (they are just like tee-shirt material. I didn't think when ordering to maybe see if there was a thicker material).

I have one newborn sleepsack that is also tee shirt material (fail again...unless maybe we put super warm pajamas under?).

Here's my plan once LO hits 10 lbs (if he doesn't come out at 10lbs.). I have two fleece Halo Sleep Sacks. I plan to pair these with thinner gowns (the ones with the elastic at the feet). I figure this will not only be warmer since it's a fleece bag...but also easy for overnight changes.

  • I recieved both sleep sacks and swaddling blankets at my baby shower. I plan to try out both and see what LO likes better...well, what helps her sleep better I guess...

  • we've been using sleeps sacks mostly, they have worked great! We also have a few Swaddle Me's, which are like sleep sacks kind of.

  • Playing it by ear - have all three, will use whatever seems to work best, or several at the same time.  Our place stays pretty cold this time of year no matter how high we crank the thermostat...crappy apartment HVAC, seriously!
  • sleep sak. we have a whole bunch in case of spit up, and other bodily fluid accidents. DS hated the swaddler type sleep sacks. He liked having his arms free with the regular sleep sack.

  • DS loves a light blanket wrapped around him so he is basically swaddled but able to kick his feet free because he loves his little feet and toes rubbed.

  • we have been swaddling her at night.  I have been thinking of moving to a sleepsack because sometimes she fights the swaddle and we dont' swaddle her all day so I'm wondering if she would do better without it at night.

I wouldn't put a loose blanket in the crib until she can move around/sit up on her own.

  • we'll use a sleep sack or swaddleme. the nurse that taught our taking care of baby class said a blanket tucked into the end and sides of the crib was acceptable but shouldn't be above mid-chest level.

  • We have had good luck with footed sleepers and the sleep sacks. DJ hates being swaddled and I don't want a loose blanket in there as I think he would pull it over his head, he likes doing that lol

  • We use a swaddle sleep sack and sit works really, really well for us. Another mom recommended a woombie to me as well.
