Already 4 cm - HELP!

So I am 35w1d and today I had my first cervix check and I'm already 4 cm! Anyone else this dilated this early? If this happened to you in a previous pregnancy, when did you go into labor?

REALLY shocked over here. No contractions and water hasn't broken, but MAN - we're not ready yet! Bake a little longer LO!

  • Keep your legs crossed!  jk.

I'd definitely try to take it easy, avoid sex, dancing and bouncing on the birth ball if you want to keep that baby inside for a while longer.

  • I'm 3 cm dilated.  Doc told me today he doubts I'll make it to Jan, but I have to tell you that I have heard from multiple sources that dilation will tell you little about when you will go into active labor.  You may be there for a few days or a few weeks before dilating any more.

That being said, I'm packing my hospital bag today just in case ;)

    Good luck!

  • Here's hoping that they stay in there for a while but it's a good feeling to know that you are almost halfway there already! That might make things much easier for you later on.

The bolded part is correct.  You can be dilated a few centimeters and be weeks away from delivery or you can be closed up tighter than an drum and deliver the next day.  Dilation is only one part of the puzzle.  You also need to look at effacement and station.

I'm declining all cervical checks until I go into labor.  I know I'd obsess over it and it really doesn't tell you anything.

  • I know dilation doesn't really tell you anything, but at least you know you have made some progress just in case you do have to be induced it won't be so terrible.

This ... exciting though! Just think, some people are in pain laboring to get to 4 cm and you're already there. You're already at the point where you can get an epidural, if you that's your choice, as soon as you go into labor!

  • Thanks for the responses! I know baby has also dropped way down (and OUCH my ladyparts) because she didn't have to search for my uterus as usual (it's retroverted) because it was RIGHT THERE. It's scary but exciting - I would just like for him to stay in a little longer!

  • A friend was just telling me the other day she was 3cm & 75% effaced for 3 weeks before going into labor.

  • I have no idea what it means, but it must be both scary and exciting!

Have you felt like you were going to have LO early? Any crazy pain or anything?

  • I neglected to mention I am also 90% effaced - so my cervix is almost gone!

Yes, have had crazy pain in my ladyparts for the past few days - that must have been when he dropped down. No contractions or anything yet.

I always thought I was going to be closer to my due date - not this early!

Wow, mama! You are certainly preparing :)

Your crazy pain sounds a lot like me recently. I have a lot of pressure right now, but didn't think anything of it. Now I am worried I am going to go in next week (for my GBS test) and they'll find me super dilated. Ha!

  • I would definitely start getting ready. I delivered the day after I was 4cm at a check up. My SIL on the other hand was at 5cm for several weeks, and still had to be induced! Hope your LO hangs in there for a while. I bet whenever she comes you'll have a pretty quick labor.
