2nd Trimester

Did you have a Quad test?

I had my 22 week ultrasound this week, and there was one measurement that was borderline normal, it still falls within the normal range but was at the high end. The kicker is that the baby was not in a good position for this measurement so the U/S tech wasn't totally confident in the measurement anyway. Long story short, our OBGYN wasn't concerned about this, but said we could do a quad test just to ease our minds.

We decided to go ahead and have one since it only required some of my blood. But now that I'm reading more about the quad test, it sounds like the results can be very misleading and may give us even more to worry about when there may be no problems at all. Did anyone have one? How long did it take to get the results? Were they accurate or did you get more testing? I'm just a little worried about all this now and wondering if I should have avoided it all together :(

Re: Did you have a Quad test?

  • I had one at 17 weeks. Everything came back good.

  • I did one, and my OBGYN warned me that it has a tendency to send back false positives, but at least it is the beginning to know if you need to be further tested.  Just remember, and this what I did, it is made to come back positive so the doctors are overaly cautious, which is what we want them to do.

The question becomes do you want to know?  That was the hard part for us.

  • I had blood drawn at 16 weeks for this.  My a/s is on the 19th.  I haven't heard anything about the results.  My doctor only calls if there is a problem that would need further testing.

  • My 1st tri and u/s were normal, but my quad screen came back with a 1:12 chance for down syndrome. I had a more extensive u/s and an amnio and spent two weeks sooo scared. My baby girl is just fine. I didnt do this test with my sons and if I had to do it over again I would skip it. I can see its benefits for some, but it caused us so much worry and she is fine.

  • Just remember that you will not get a positive or negative (which is why I don't understand the "false positive" thing). You'll get odds. My dr. office considers it a "positive" result if your odds are 1:300 or worse. So a "positive" result means that the likelihood of your baby having a problem is higher than someone with better odds, but chances are still VERY VERY good that your baby is normal.

FWIW, my odds went to 1:20,000 with the quad screen and I was able to relax after that.

  • My Quad Screen results actually helped a lot after my anatomy scan. Thank God I went ahead and had that done all g with the NY scan and triple screen at 12w.

Our baby currently has 2 cororid plexus cysts on it's brain. This is a soft marker for Down's and Trisomy 18. Since my Quad Screen results with my NT scan gave us a 1:250,000 odds for Trisomy 18 my radiologist didn't even suggest amnio and thinks they will go away by 3rd trimester. We are being checked for growth again at 24weeks. So the Quad screen can actually AID in calming your worries...not the reverse....

  • Thanks for this posting. I was on the fence about having mine done. My husband wanted me to have it but I didn't want the stress or worry if it was positive. But I can just imagine the relief I will feel if it is negative. I am having it drawn today with my A/S scan.
