July 2012 Moms

Not a good appointment...

So I went to my first appointment today and when the doctor checked my uterus he found that it is tilted and not measuring at 10weeks.  He casually mentioned that I might just be miscarrying or had an incomplete miscarriage.  I have an ultrasound later to determine viability...really hoping for good news.

  • I'm sorry... I really hope everything is okay!!

Just know that the tilted uterus thing shouldn't be an issue. Approximately 25% of women have a tilted (aka retroverted) uterus -- including myself -- and it's just a natural variance, like being left handed. It's rare that it causes any serious problems, or leads to miscarriage or anything like that.

As for the uterus measuring smaller, could it be possible that you got pregnant a little later than you thought? If they're basing the 10 weeks off of the date of your last period, they're assuming you ovulated around day 14 of your cycle. But many women ovulate later than that (sometimes MUCH later -- I once didn't ovulate until cycle day 57!), and thus the embryo/uterus would seem way too small if calculated using LMP, even though in truth it's exactly where it should be based on the date of actual conception.

Fingers crossed for you that this turns out to be the case, and everything looks good on the ultrasound!

Ditto this, although I don't have a tilted uterus.  Although my mom does, and back in the day they told her she'd never be able to have kids because of it.  And yet, she managed to have me and my brother.  Hopefully your doc is kind of old school and you are just getting nervous unnecessarily.  Good luck with the u/s!

  • I have a tilted uterus too, I guess as the baby gets bigger it tends to correct itself and isn't an issue. Are you bleeding or cramping or are you labs off? Just wondering why they suspect a m/c due to fundal height measuring small? I thought the uterus wasn't even palpable until 12 weeks or so?

  • Oh, I also just remembered... sometimes a tilted uterus can make it a little harder to find the baby with an ultrasound. A transvaginal u/s is easiest with a tilted uterus, since the transabdominal u/s won't be able to get as close, making it less accurate. Same thing with a doppler!

And the PP who said that it usually corrects itself during pregnancy is right. As the uterus grows, it usually tilts to where it needs to be. Sometimes it will revert back to being tilted after birth, but it's nothing to worry about.

  • Thank you all so much for the well wishes.  The ultrasound went very well!  The baby is just the right size for 10weeks and has a healthy heart beat.  I am just thankful that it was a false alarm.  I already had one miscarriage in July and really hoped I wouldn't have to go through that again.  The doctor based his original theory on the fact that my uterus didn't feel big enough for 10 weeks.  One good part about today was that I got to see my little jumping bean bouncing all over the place!  I wasn't scheduled for an ultrasound for another few weeks!  Thank you all for the support.
