Measuring small, u/s, please respond :(

Every since they started measuring my fundal weight, I was around 2-3 weeks ahead each time. At 27 weeks, I was measuring 30 weeks. Then, at 29 weeks, I was measuring 30 weeks. Now, at 31 weeks, I'm measuring 30 weeks. That and the fact that my stomach hasn't grown in circumference since around week 25 (my concern, not hers) made her schedule me an u/s. Baby's moving and everything, but I'm really worried. What's the worst case scenario with this? Has this happened to anyone else? Any information anyone has would be appreciated. Thanks, ladies!

  • I can't give you any answers, but I can tell you that I'm in a similar boat. I am measuring 3 weeks behind (27 at 30 weeks), so my OB ordered a growth ultrasound for me too. I am trying not to worry too much, my son measured two weeks behind for most of my last pregnancy and he was healthy. My OB is just taking precautions. I will be checking back to see what other ladies say too, but try not to worry too much!

Good luck! It's so hard to not know if something's wrong. Please keep me updated.

  • I am in the same boat.  I have had many ultrasounds so they have been tracking her growth.  It is really fun to have the growth ultrasounds, so that is something to look forward to!  My baby girl is in the 24th percentile.  They are going to measure her every 2 weeks to make sure she doesn't go below the 10th percentile.  My doctor told me that is when they really start to think there is a problem.  Good luck at your ultrasound, and let us know how it goes.  Oh and if you are wondering what to expect, they will measure the skull, tummy, and femur bone, and then give you an estimated weight and tell you what percentile she is in compared to other babies at her gestational age.  At least this is how it is at my doctor's office.

  • i was measuring small too when i was twenty weeks and has to have another ultrasound again at 26. i was worried about it too, but my doctor told me that at this point it was nothing too concerning. she also informed us that my pre pregnancy weight was 105lbs and i am 5'2 and my boyfriend is 125lbs and 5'6. so cruiz may just be on the tinier side thanks to good old fashioned genetics!

at our last appointment at 28 weeks she reassured us that he was doing fine and i was measuring on the dot at 28 weeks. i know it can be scary, but good luck!

  • Please don't worry! I was measuring almost 6 weeks behind on friday and super  freaked out. I had my growth u/s today and she is just fine, measuring in the 50th percentile. She is just positioned really low and not taking up much room.

  • I also read in my pregnancy book that around 29 weeks, the uterus stops gaining amniotic fluid. Maybe you are leveling out and just the baby is growing? (they still have a decent amount of room in there). Sounds like from PPs that there can be a lot of perfectly fine reasons that this is happening. Don't worry unless the dr tells you too! Good luck at your scan...

  • I'm in a similar situation- I was measuring behind at my 29 week appt. so had a growth ultrasound on Monday. They checked the fluid levels because that can affect your measurements and see how the baby is measuring. A small fundal measurement doesn't necessarily equal a small baby. Our LO is measuring small, in the 14th percentile, but the perinatologist who did the u/s said that unless it falls below the 10th percentile it's nothing to worry about, we're just having a smaller baby. I'll will be having growth scans every 3 weeks though to make sure her growth doesn't slow down or drop.

Try not to freak out too much, everything will be fine!

  • Take a deep breath! Fundal height measurement is crazy inaccurate most of the time, and the ultrasound will give you a much better idea of how big baby really is. A lot of fundal height has to do with the position of the baby at any given time.

As long as your baby is healthy and still growing, it's all OK. Worst case scenario? You could be diagnosed with IUGR and they'll keep a really close eye on growth, to have you deliver when growth slows down or stops. It's not a horrible thing...just something that needs to be observed and dealt with when it's needed.

Our LO has been measuring consistently small since the A/S. Ranging from 12th-14th percentile each time. Not IUGR, but SGA (small for gestational age). It's directly attributed to my lousy notched uterine arteries not keeping up with the needs of the placenta, but she's perfectly happy and healthy in there, and that's the important thing. I'm currently getting growth ultrasounds every 4 weeks and next week I start NSTs twice a week.

Natural BFP (WTF?!) - 06/04/11 ~ lots of complication and drama, but sweet baby Adele born 02/07/12!

BFP #million -another girl for us! EDD - 05-08-15 (but will come early)

  • Thank you everyone! You have made me feel better. I should have asked my midwife more questions but I was still kind of thinking it over. The u/s will be a relief, I'm excited to see baby Teddy again!
