Pre-School and Daycare

PK out from Dec 23rd to 2nd of Jan! arh!

DD loves going to her Prek. And I love that she loves going. Thanksgiving they were out W-TH-F (and of course the weekend) and those days about killed us.

DD was bored, wanted to go to school- even though we had things to do (fun things!) we did crafts, saw family, went to park, etc.

She's just better when she gets to go to school.

I have no idea how I'm going to survive those 11 days.

oh, and she only goes MWF, so really she's just going to miss 5 days of school.

But I guess its just her routine now.

Any ideas of things to do? Have to be on the cheap/free. DH might have a day or 2 off and we may go to the zoo, depends on the weather. SO that would hold her for the day of and maybe the day after doing zoo memory activities.

I guess this is part vent and part- how are you handling Christmas Break (or aka- winter break)

Re: PK out from Dec 23rd to 2nd of Jan! arh!

  • This makes me thankful for my low key kids!  Sorry!  Today school was delayed ; ( by 90 minutes (which means no morning Kindergarten for my 5 yr old -or- morning preschool for my 3 yr old) by a huge tree that fell down in a storm last night that blocked a major roadway to the schools & the kids are so stinking happy to be home (they love school too), but they love just chilling around too.  They are happily (for the most part) playing in the other room with their lego's while I have been cleaning. Some mornings I am thankful too that I don't have to get everyone ready ; )

During our Christmas break, I am sure we will set up play dates with friends & family, but we are just happy to play at home too.  I am a little thankful this year since my husband is taking the week off too ; )

  • Lucky!! Our preschool/MDO last day is the 15th and they don't go back until the 3rd. They only go 2x a week for 5 hours, but come on!! DD2 and DS are going to be climbing the walls. DD1's Kindy has a half day on the 21st and then is off until the 2nd. Lots of playdates, crafts, museum visits, zoo if the weather is nice, and anything else I can think of will be done. Luckily DH is off the 24th though 1st so I have "help".
  • DS is off from Dec 16-Jan 3. It's a long time!  He goes to school 4 mornings a week and is off on Fridays and they are always the toughest days for us. He also really likes his routine. He's actually home today sick and I'm already wondering how we'll make it all day.

Thankfully, my mom will be in town for part of that time, so she can help entertain him. We have also booked the Santa train for one day, plan to do the zoo lights and a couple of other holiday things, and hopefully just get out of the house a bit. I'm not nearly done shopping, so I'm sure we'll be at the mall plenty. LOL!

  • Yep, we are off from the 16th till the 4th.  I don't mind DD being home the whole time and we are traveling one of the weeks, but she drives me batty asking about friends and school over and over and over and over!

  • I have a huge work project due Dec. 30th, so DH is taking the week of Dec. 26th off. The novelty of having daddy home on a weekday never wears off for DD. It's up to him to plan their days. I'll be going out of my mind with my deadline.

  • Also wanted to add that there might be winter camp-esque activities in your area that week. Before I knew if DH would have the week off, I looked into a soccer/music/dance camp that runs the week between Christmas and New Year's for preschool-aged kids & up. You could choose if you wanted to send your child mornings, all day or just a couple of the days that whole week and the prices were actually much more reasonable than DD's regular preschool or a babysitter.

  • I might have to look into to see if there are any camps goign on, but I have a feeling there won't be any of the prek ages. DD already takes dance and their Christmas show (recital) is this Sat. and then next week are 'class parties' then they are out until the 9th!

I posted on fb to see if any other moms want to get together for playdates but I don't have many who live in the area and have kids similar enough ages. (alot of my friends have older kids or none at all.)

  • We chose a year-round preschool for this reason. Neither DH or myself can afford to take any time off (aside from emergencies) and I can't imagine the preschool being closed for a couple of weeks for the holiday. Yikes!!

  • DD is off Dec. 16 to Jan. 4.  I am saving some of our Christmas crafts for then (instead of doing one everyday after naptime).  We will also do a lot of baking in the morning.  I am looking forward to having her home with me.

  • We are in the same boat.  Last year it went smoother than I realized b/c I get a lot of days off during the holidays and so does DH.  Really my nanny only had a handful of days where Harm was out of school and we were not on holiday.  Those days Miriam learned to really schedule and plan ahead.  She planned outings each day and let Harm know the schedule at the start of the day.  Letting him know what was going to happen made a big difference.

  • We are out (my school as well as DS's PK) from next monda y the 19th, until he goes back on January 3.  So it is like 11 days.  Some days are gonna be hard, very hard.  I am pregnant, so I can't be too active (as in I was at the bball field throwing him the ball and running after it during our Thanksgiving break--which was a week long), that the thought of it makes me sick.  LOL.  Lots of crafts, lots of playground time !

  • I feel ya. We're out for two whole weeks (actually more, since their last day is the 16th, and then the first day back is the 2nd) and I'm dreading it. It's so hard to find stuff to do for that long!

  • My kid's last day of school was yesterday!  We're out until the 4th too.  Even a *year round* school is going to be closed awhile over the holidays.  We are actually on a year round program, meaning we get more time off at breaks and less time over the summer months.  It's pretty common to be closed for at least 2 weeks at Christmas.  I don't know of a school that's not.

ETA - if you are going to work while your child is at preschool and they are not closed for several weeks around the holidays, I'm guessing that it is also a daycare.

My big thing is keeping my older one quiet while the younger one naps in the afternoon.  I bought him a new puzzle and an activity book to help (although I know I'm not going to get 3 weeks of quiet with that, ha!)  and then Santa is bringing some work books too, I heard - LOL.

Same here. I was thinking that your child doesn't have that much time off at all. Enjoy it. I actually look forward to winter break - baking cookies, playdates, movies, playing with new Christmas gifts, etc.

  • DS's last day is the 21st and goes back on the 3rd..  Next year, at his new school, his last day will be the 16th.  I think that's really early.

We do have a good time when he's off from preschool but as with any day, there are also those trying days :-(

  • Can you plan play dates with any of her friends from school?  My DD's PreK program is only closed a few days as they are part of the before/after school program which also is open over breaks and summer for a fee (included in PreK cost) so every year - if I have to work, my kids will still go and they do great field trips and special things for the kids.  My DD loves it as its still at school and with her friends but they do such fun and different things for the kids.

  • Mine is off from the 16th (early dismissal) until the 4th.  Whew!  She goes three days a week full days, so I'm used to having her home 2 full days a week anyway, but yeah, we'll be planning lots of stuff!

Her school has a winter camp that I'm going to send her to probably two days the week it runs, and then DH will be off work for almost two weeks as well.  We'll run errands/finish up Christmas shopping, go see Christmas lights, go see Santa, do crafts (some; I'm not very crafty) and baking, have playdates, go do indoor playground stuff, playgrounds, play inside, watch movies....my mom will probably take her some so that DH and I can tackle the huge list of projects we want to do around the house.  DH and DD will be gone this weekend, and then the week after Christmas, we are going out of town for 2 days to the beach near us to be with his family.

We also have lots of family stuff to keep us busy and Christmas parties...I usually think "holy crap, that's a LOT of time for us all to be home together", but honestly, with all the stuff we end up planning and doing and all the projects, the time usually flies by and I'm sad when it's over.
