Re: tricycle, 3-in-1, or balance bike?

  • DS #1 has a tricycle and a small bike with training wheels.  He has not mastered either of  them yet.  He doesn't have that much interest for whatever reason, but DS #2 is obsessed with trying them out.  We are getting him a balance bike for Christmas.  We got the giant one from a bicycle store.  It is nice because the seat can go really low and his feat can touch (he is exceptionally short for 20 mos).  I am hoping that they both use it and it makes learning to ride a real bike easier.  They loved walking it around the bike shop.

  • I'm interested in answers too.  We plan on getting something for Stella for her birthday in March.  We got her this for Christmas, but it's not quite the same as having a real bike.

  • Charlie got a Radio Flyer tricycle that has a push bar on the back when he was 18 mo. & mastered pedaling around 2 years. Charlie now has a bike w/ training wheels and Paul has the trike. His feet don't reach both pedals at the same time, but he has a ton of fun riding around while we push him!

  • We got Justin a tricycle with the push handle on the back as well.  I would say over the summer (age 3) he was finally able to reach the pedals on his own so the push bar was nice to have before that.

  • DD has a balance bike and a plastic trike I picked up for a few bucks at a garage sale.  This summer, all she liked was the trike, but it is like the one the neighbor boy rides.  She couldn't reach the peddles, but got around pretty fast without needing the peddles.  She took a couple hard falls on the balance bike.  I am really hoping that since the neighbor boy got a "big boy" bike with training wheels, we can convince her it is like her balance bike and give it another try.  I want her to like it.
