DH and I found the most perfect house ever in Steiner. I work in the Capitol complex. How much will I hate life if we buy the house, and my commute becomes Steiner to the Capitol/downtown?
I don't do it but I have coworkers who do... they don't gripe about it as much as the people who commute from round rock. I think coming down 2222 is a little easier than 183.

Yay for Steiner! I don't commute to downtown on a regular basis, but the traffic out here can be ridiculously bad since everyone is headed in the same direction. It seems like there's always something going on whether it's an accident or just unexplained traffic. I don't know what it's like commuting from Round Rock, but it's definitely not fun driving into town from here. Maybe if you can work out your timing, it won't be as bad. Good luck!
I don't make the commute but I think it depends on your tolerance for driving and the hours you work. We live in RR and DH works across from Barton Creek mall. If he tries to go in at 8 and leave at 5, it's BRUTAL. But his schedule is very flexible and he usually chooses to go in no early than 9. He tries to get back on the road by 4-4:30. If he's not out of the office by 5pm, it's usually not worth it to him to leave until 6:30. He'll be stuck in traffic for 1-1.5 hours anyway. If he leaves at 6:30, it's an easy 25 minutes.
I used to babysit in Steiner and had to be there by 8:30. The traffic going in the other direction looked pretty nasty
Most of the doctors I work with in RR live Belterra or Lakeway and that's 45 minutes in ideal traffic. But I never hear them complain. And they sure as hell ain't gonna live in RR if they can afford to live somewhere nicer
I live at Far West and work on 620 and I can tell you that the traffic is awful coming in on 183 (while I'm going out). Its not as awful on 2222, especially after you cross 360, but its still quite a commute.
I lived in Steiner for about 2 years and the few times I had to commute to downtown for job interviews and such were terrible (I'm talking at least 1 hr, up to 1.5 hrs). I would not want to do that on a daily basis. Getting in and out of Steiner during rush hour was a pain, and traffic always got backed up all the way to the 2222. It would take at least 20 minutes every morning just to get there.
Besides that, I loved living in Steiner and would consider it if I could adjust my work hours so I wouldn't have to commute during rush hour.
Now that they have basically completed construction at the low water crossing just east of 360, 2222 is a lot better. However if there is an accident or basically anything abnormal like a light being out as was the other morning, your commute is awful. It can take me easily over an hour plus to get to work...and I leave at the @sscrack of dawn. If I'm out the door before 7 am, I can usually make it it under 40-45 minutes, however if I run 15 minutes late, it can be an hour or more. It takes about 50 minutes to get home when I leave downtown at 4 pm.
Dh and I are ready to move. 5 years and we are sick and tired of it. Plus it's difficult to run the kids to the pedi (or any errands basically) during the day being so far from home. I am tired of planning around traffic.
I lived in Steiner for 5 years; luckily I worked from home for 18 months of that, because commutes are brutal from there, particularly down 2222. It got progressively worse over the 5 years we lived there. We moved last year because of it. We both had about an hour commute each way (I worked south, he worked east of downtown), and it was a pain to coordinate daycare pickups, etc.
It is a gorgeous neighborhood with great schools though, so if there's any flexibility in work schedules, that could work for you.
