C-sections

How soon were you up and moving?

I've seen a lot of posts where people recommend to "get moving as soon as possible" and that they were up and moving right away.  I walked from my bed to the bathroom about 12 hours post op when I had my catheter and IV out.  I thought this was a really, really long time and was just wondering when the soonest you could possibly be up and moving is.

  • It was about 12 hours. I know it was that night so it might have been a little less than 12 hours.

  • I had my c-section at 8:00 a.m. and was up walking to the bathroom at 4:00. I actually asked to get up because I wanted the cathetar out. They said the sooner you get up, the better. (when you get your feeling back in your legs of course)
  • I went to the bathroom around 24 hours after surgery

  • It  was w/in 24 hrs but don't remember specifics.  I didn't get out of recovery and into a room for about 8 hrs b/c I needed a transfusion then I transferred from a double to a private room and it took a while to remove the catheter.

  • I had my C at 1230PM. I was up walking around at 8pm.

  • I can't remember exactly, I know it was within 24 hours. I had my c sec at 3.40pm and if I wasn't up that night it was the following morning. Now that I am thinking about it though, it was the same night. I didn't go to bed with a catheter in.
  • Yeah, something like 12 hours. My section was at 11:30pm, and I know I went to the bathroom, had my little sponge bath, and sat in a chair sometime before noon. At 1pm, the nurse came in to take me for my first hallway walk, but I almost passed out because the slow-release morphine made me woozy.

  • My unplanned c/s was at about 3pm in the afternoon and the nurse had me up during the morning shift, maybe 7:30-8am?

  • I don't remember exactly when I got up but I had my c/s early in the morning and I was showered that evening before dinner and had my catheter out that night (hated that thing).  They wouldn't let me do any of that until I was comfortable walking on my own. So I was definitely up and moving probably by early afternoon.

  • Also about 12 hours.  I think my anesthesia took longer than normal to wear off because I had a PCEA (patient controlled epidural analgesic) that still had "numbing medicine" in it for a while.  However once I was up and going, I was walking back and forth to the NICU multiple times a day.
  • The nurses wanted me to stay in bed for 24 hours but I felt like I had to get up around 9 hours after the surgery.  I had a breakdown begging for them to unhook me and they finally did around 10 hours out.  I was fine and actually walked around the wing that same evening (very slowly of course!)

  • I stood about 3 hours post op and freaked my nurse out. I didn't walk until about 12 hours later (and got my foley out then as well). I am a nurse and felt moving sooner than later was best.

  • My CS was at 4:13pm Saturday and DS went straight to the NICU (resp. distress, meconium aspiration) so as soon as my cath was out at 4am my nurse helped me clean myself up and get to the NICU. It was the longest 12 hours of my life. I was walking assisted by that evening because I was too impatient to wait for a wheelchair and the NICU was in a different wing of the hospital. I did that walk every 3-4 hours for feedings until checkout on Thursday (skipping one feeding a night to sleep). I had a quick recovery and attribute it to walking around as long as I felt comfortable.

  • My hospital has a policy of a minimum of 12 hours. For my 1st c/s, my nurse wasn't that great and I didn't know any better.  I didn't get up out of bed for almost 24 hours.  With DS2, I was smarter and insisted that I get out of bed about 9 hours after my c/s.
  • My LO was born at about 4:30pm, and I'm pretty sure I wasn't up until the next morning.  Maybe 6am or so?  I think the fact that most of the time was overnight had an impact.  My guess is that if I had the cesection in the morning, I would have been up and walking after less time.  I had no desire to get up and walk around at 2 am for no reason.

  • My hospital took all the monitors off and the catheter out 24 hours after surgery. I got up to go to the bathroom and passed out. Not fun.

  • This.

I set my alarm for just before the 12 hour mark so we could call the nurse.  I wasn't allowed back into the NICU until I could get out of bed (besides doing a drive by on the way from recovery to my room).

    longest 12 hours ever.

  • Here's mommy brain for you, DD 2 is only a week old and I really have to think hard about this one!  I'm pretty sure that the cath was out around 8pm, after my c/s at 10:30am. I was up and walking then.

With DD1, it was 24 hours post surgery. And it sucked!

  • I had my c-section around 1015 (baby was born 1028). I was in the recovery room until 1230 then moved to my postpartum room. They had me transfer myself into my new bed by sliding myself over (with some assistance) which was a lot of work on its own since I still had some numbness to my legs. It was around 430pm when they had me walk to the bathroom to change my pad. Went for a walk down the hallway around 930pm that night.

  • I was up and walking 8 hours after my section, both times.  It's important to try to keep active...getting up every couple hours to go to the bathroom, take a walk in the halls, keep moving in bed.  Just don't lay there the entire time in bed and not do anything.

  • I am an OB nurse and each hospital policy is different.  Our hospital we get you up and moving at around 8 hours after delivery, this helps prevent DVT's, pulmonary problems, helps decrease your pain, believe it or not, in the long run the more you move the better you feel.
  • I had my c/s at 10am. I was up and walking at 8am the next morning. I was unable to get up before that because of the epideral being left in.
