iPod Touch in Lieu of the Leappad

I really wanted to buy DD a Leappad for Christmas, but it seems like they are sold out everywhere.  I set up an alert to let me know when they are in stock, but they sell out within minutes.  So, I was thinking that maybe I will get her an IPod Touch instead.  With the 10% off coupon at Target, and the $25 gift card, I should be able to buy it for $150 (minus the gift card amount of course).  This isn't much more than the Leappad after you factor in games.  My only fear is that it will be too "advanced" for her.  What do you all think?

Re: iPod Touch in Lieu of the Leappad

  • Ds as been playing with my iPad and iPhone since her age and is completely proficient. We got him an itouch for Christmas this year so that we can load only his apps, movies, music and audiobooks and so that he'll have something he can use when he travels to the grandparents (he goes out of state to their house a few times a year for a week). We got the itouch, an otterbox defender case (a must IMO) and a set of kids earbuds with volume limiting capability.

  • My DH bought DD an iTouch for her 3rd b-day. I love it- I have one too. There are a lot of amazing apps out there. Montessori, Bob's Books, etc. plus you can put movies/TV shows on, which I know aren't the best, but great for long car rides, etc. Also it has a built in camera and DD takes pictures- they were bad in the beginning but now she is getting the hang of it.

  • If you are going to go a video game route, I think it's a great option when you factor in the Target discounts and the fact that Leappad games are pricey.

Target also has a deal coming up in the next couple days where you get a $10 gift card when you spend $50 or more.

Would you mind sharing if the 10% coupon and $25 gift card are ongoing offers? Do you happen to have a link? Thanks!

  • My dd1 will be six on Christmas Eve, and she is getting a I-pod touch for her birthday.  I was hesitant to give her one, but made the final decision to get her one.  On the other hand, I am not getting my four year old one.  She is getting a Nintendo DSI for Christmas.  I have pre-loaded DD1 I-pod as we will be traveling home in another country during her birthday.  We currently are living in Miami, but going home to Canada for the holidays.
  • My boys love my Ipod touch. There are a lot of apps for it. DH didn't want to go that route though, so we are doing the LeapPads.

  • We got ds a ipod touch when he was 2.5 years old.  He completely mastered it by 3 and now he knows how to play the games better that DH or I.

  • DD1 (4) has an ipod touch and so do I. DD2(2.5yo)  plays both of ours all the time! We all love it! They watch netflix on it, their are TONS of apps, many free or just 99 cents! So my vote is for the ipod!
