giving drops for pink eye

DD has pink eye and has to have drops (ciloxan) 5 times a day in her eye.  I just gave the first dose and it was a disaster.  I don't know if any went in at all!  Advice?  I am not sure if bribery works at this age.

Re: giving drops for pink eye

  • First -wow 5 times a day!  The most we have every done is 3.  Anyway, wrap her in a towel or blanket and get them in quick.  We are going through the same thing.

  • if its possible to have someone help you thats what worked best for us, one held hands & then you just have to open up their eye & hope for the best!! I know its not the ideal situation but we found it got more in than trying myself. After a couple days H decided that it wasn't such a bad thing & finally let me do it myself without a fight. I hope it gets to that point quickly for ya!! Good luck!

  • get the dropper really close to the edge of her nose at the inside corner of the eye before dropping the liquid. I actually rested the dropper on the bridge of her nose, but DH was cradling her and holding her head. She got candy after each session.

  • We are currently giving Liam eye drops for pink eye two times a day (I'm with the other poster-5x, WTF???)

Here is what we do.  We lay him on the floor or on his little fold out couch.  Then DH holds his arms above his head and I place my legs over his legs.  I then get the drops ready in one hand and pry his little eye open with the other and drop the two drops in as quickly as I can.  Then I repeat with the other eye.  Afterward, we give him some Froot Loops.

He is beginning to associate the Froot Loops with the medication so he is taking it a teensy bit better.  I think bribery would work if you find a little snack she really likes.

  • I use the blanket technique: Wrap them in a blankie very secure with their arms at their sides so they can not move. Think baby burrito. Lay them on the ground.  Literally get on top of them - not sitting on them, but hovering them.  And hold their eyelids open. It stinks because they cry and yell and scream and you think you are causing them harm, but really, you are just trying to help them and make it better.  They are crying more b/c they are mad and can't move as opposed to the drops.  The drops really do no hurt at all.

Sawyer Quinn (09/06/06), Rory Keaton (04/07/08) and Kinsley Saffron (10/12/10). Forever and ever my babies they'll be. A rose can say "I love you",orchids can enthrall, but a weed bouquet in a chubby fist, yes, that says it all.~Author Unknown

  • I sit on the floor, with my legs in a V shape.  I put DD's head in my lap/crotch (sorry to refer to it that way, LOL), and I put her arms under my legs and pin them down.  I then use the "rest the dropper on the inside of the bridge of her nose" technique.  My pedi said it doesn't matter if her eye is open, closed or blinking, if you put the drop right there in the corner of her eye, when she opens it or closes it or blinks it, the drop will roll right into her eye and he's right.  I've even put the drops there when DD had her eyes CLOSED, and when she opened her eye I actually watched the liquid roll down the corner of her eye, into her eye.

Anyway, after a few days of drops (we had pink eye a few weeks ago), DD began to get used to this routine and when we'd sit down to do the drops, she'd actually hang on to my legs and grab my pant legs like it was a game.

  • uuggghhhh! just went through this! it is impossible, One person held her down and the other administer the drops. she got used to it after a few tries. they said to us every 3 hours for 7 days. but what they really mean is do it as much as u can for 5 days and then its probably ok. how much can your kid tolerate?
  • When I had to do this, I put her on her changing table, held her down, and put the drop on the inside corner of her eye. Then when she opened her eye, the drop slid right in. And that way I didn't have to go all Clockwork Orange on her.

  • Thanks for all your ideas!  The partner technique has worked for the last two doses, but today I'll have to do a few on my own.  I may try the blanket wrap...

DD is really into her baby dolls and pretend play with them, so I've been giving the baby the medicine first and giving the baby her treat... then having DD do it.  That also seems to help!

Just to clarify, we only have to do 5 times a day for 2 days, then two times a day.
