For those that wanted to know, I am in the Tacoma area near Stevens St, Union Ave, and also near Allenmore Hospital, and the 16 hwy. I don't know if that means anything to anyone...
If so, is there anything fun to do around there? I will be a SAHM for awhile since we can't afford daycare ( and I might watch a few kids in my home since I have experience and love kids).
Also, any recommendations for pediatricians, regular doctors for DH and I, OBs, Veterinarians, etc...? I saw the post below and I thought I should ask too!
TIA
I am excited to be joining your state next week (saturday!)
Re: My Location
Thank you very much! Good luck to you too! We were just in Las Vegas in October. It was awesome! My husband is working in Renton (I think...)
There is a shopping center right near there and a library. Your less than 15 minutes from the zoo and downtown (where the new childrens museum will be opening soon).
The pierce county library has passes for the state history museum, museum of glass, and children's museum (but I don't know if they will for the new one), plus they have really great childrens programs. Passes are available first come first serve so you just have to keep an eye out for them. I'm pretty sure there is a 'free admission' day for all of them too.
The zoo can be spendy, but make friends with someone who has a membership and you can get in for free.
Welcome to the area!
Third Thursday evening is free for the "adult" museums. The Children's museum used to be free on the first(?) Friday of every month, but i think it's a different day and isn't free anymore... should say on their website. I think they are offering discount admission for weekday afternoons, too.Wright park is in the same vicinity as the museums (roughly) and is a nice park on its own, but also has the conservatory. I like going there in the winter, especially, b/c it's warm and has such lovely plants/flowers. Point Defiance Park is a really great park (a few exits farther down Hwy 16 than you, and then a couple miles). That's where Pt. Def Zoo is, but there are also several botanical gardens (rose, dahlia, native plants, rhodedendrons), ponds, walking/jogging and bike trails, 5-mile drive (with lookouts to lovely views), lawns, picnic areas, etc. I love that park
Tacoma Nature Center is neat, too. Inside there is a small child-friendly experiential learning center with toys/puzzles/dress up/etc., and child-height tanks to look at bugs, reptiles, etc. Outside has a few short nature trails (maybe 2 miles worth) and a bridge over a pond where you can see ducks and ducklings, turtles, frogs, lily pads, dragonflies, etc. I saw an owl last time i was there, which is extra cool in my book. Other area parks (and more on these) here: https://www.metroparkstacoma.org/page.php?id=2
Freighthouse Square (by the Tacoma Dome) is a small shopping center. It's usually got a lot of empty storefronts, but it's not generally busy, so it can be a nice place to get out of the house w/o the hectic bustle of the mall (and easier parking!). There are a couple fast-food-type restaurants and coffee there. There also used to be a great little toy store, but it's been a while and it may not have stuck around.
