Breech Baby - Q&A #2

When is the LO considered a "Breech"??

Why do they schedule a C section instead of waiting until 40wks to see if baby turns?

Re: Breech Baby - Q&A #2

  • To answer your 2nd question... For me, I'm waiting. Idk if she is breech now, but I will tell them no if they try to schedule a c section. IF she is breech, and still is when I go into labor naturally (or if I hit like 42 weeks) then they can do a c-section. But I've heard and read that baby can flip up until just a couple hours birth you go into labor so I will wait and see.

  • 1.Im guessing the closer you get so maybe about 37 or 38 weeks, my baby is breeched right now but a nurse said they only really worry maybe around 38 weeks.

    2. Thats a good question lol, maybe for "just in case" purposes but im sure if the baby turns they wouldnt do one unless medically necessary and allow the mother to deliver naturally if she so chooses.

  • Babies are breech at any time in the pregnancy when he or she is head up. "Breech" is just referencing the position.

Many doctors go ahead and schedule c-sections for a variety of reasons, but that way it is scheduled and patients know that if baby hasn't turned by a certain point, they are having the c-section. From a logistical standpoint, it's easier to have it scheduled and cancel it versus the other way around.

As pp's have stated- 'breech' is the position lo is in.  There are three different types of breech presentations.

     https://www.fpnotebook.com/ob/Ld/BrchPrsntn.htm

Basically, most doctors are no longer skilled in breech delivery and schedule a cesarean instead.  There are different risk factors to consider when delivering breech such a placenta placement in case of a low lying placenta or a previa (placenta covering the cervix), cord prolapse, 'proven pelvis', baby weight/size, etc.  These are all things that could cause problems and that hospitals don't take lightly and due to insurance, they recommend csections.

If you haven't seen it yet, I've posted it on every breech post I've responded to (I do apologize if it's overkill, but I REALLY like this blog post, mainly because she really talks about the OPTIONS you have when you have a breech birth and while her opinion is pretty clear, I think she does a decent 'no judgement' presentation).
