Trying to Get Pregnant

PCOS

I just got off the phone with my OB's medical assistant, and she basically told me that my b/w and u/s showed PCOS. I have an appointment with the doctor on Dec. 22nd to discuss the results in detail and to formulate a plan...

I am heartbroken! After getting pregnant on my own twice (ended up m/c both), I figured it would happen again.

My cycles have been getting shorter, which I mentioned to her at my annual last month, so she ordered testing.

Sorry for the random posting, just looking for some support form people going through the same thing... :(:(:(

Re: PCOS

  • So sorry to hear this news, I know it must be tough.

If it is not to insensitive, can I ask you a few questions?  I have had 2 m/c to, and am wondering what symtoms of PCOS you have?  I have long cycles to...

    Thanks..

  • Sorry to hear the news that you have pcos. However, since you have been pregnant twice you at least know you ovulate. Your miscarriages might just be bad luck or could be caused by the pcos. Maybe all you need is a little added progesterone to keep future pregnancies? Try not to worry too much until you have a chance to talk to your doctor.

OBs really have no business treating PCOS- it is often a hormone issue and that needs to be handled by an RE. PCOS is also a diagnosis some OB's just like to toss out there when they don't know what's going on. My old OB "diagnosed" me with PCOS. My current OB did everything he could to hold in laughing when I told him that.

SoulCysters has some great resources to get more information about PCOS and might give you some ideas of questions to ask as well.

I totally agree with Ghost Monkey! At my old OB (before switching to the current one which I love) I felt like they just wanted to label me with a problem to slap a band-aid over the problems I was having with my cycles.

I too found a lot of great information and support from Soul Cysters! Try not to stress too much - a lot of women overcome PCOS and go on to have healthy children! I have it...and I'm trying my hardest not to let it defeat me.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions! :) Good luck hun, don't stress!

Thanks for the recs, GM. I have googled it today, and A LOT of the symptoms fit, although I know that it doesn't necessarily mean I have it. I am hoping to get more info from my OB, but will probably just get a referral to a RE.

I am also planning on losing weight/exercising ASAP, as I have read that is the most helpful non-medical intervention. Thanks for the support ladies...

  • I'm sorry =(  I was diagnosed with PCOS at the age of fourteen.  My last u/s showed my entire left ovary and tube completely covered with cysts and a few on the right.  I'm currently working on getting an appointment with my doc to see what the latest is and what the next step needs to be.  I remember how devestated I was when I was told at 14 years old.  I can certainly understand your pain and sadness.  I stopped BCP in August and my cycles are fairly long right now.  Only time I had short cycles was on BCP, so not sure about that part of it.  Keep us updated!

And I know this is easy to say but try not to get too down.  My mom had PCOS and 4 children, sister PCOS and 2 kids, other sister endo and 2 kids.  This what keeps my head and spirit up, knowing it isn't impossible.  Just hard

Thanks for the reply. I get what you ladies mean about OBs not knowing/just throwing a bandaid on the problem, but I just don't get that impression from her... I will be checking out Soul Cysters! Thanks!

  • Having PCOS doesn't necessarily mean you can't get pregnant on your own. I hope your appointment on the 22nd goes well.

Very true. It can, however, complicate things. I hope that's not the case. On an unrelated note, I'm so sorry to hear about your loss... :(

  • I hope you don't mind me responding.  I was diagnosed with PCOS 5-yrs ago, which was confirmed by my RE a little over 2-yrs ago.  I was not ovulating, ended up doing 3 rounds of Femara, got pregnant and m/c twice.  After the second m/c I did RPL testing, lost a bunch of weight (50lbs total, but over almost 2-yrs) and started ovulating on my own.  I started progesterone supplements and extra Folic acid due to my test results.  It took 5-months to get pregnant this time.
