My Dr today asked me today if I planned to travel for Christmas (I'll be 36 weeks then). He breathed a sigh of relief when I told him I was planning on staying home this year. I thought it was common sense to stay local this late in the game, but he told me a story about a woman in the practice who was 38 weeks and drove up to PA (8 hours from where we're at in NC). Lo and behold, she went into labor. She insisted that she only wanted her doctor to deliver the baby, so she makes her husband race her back down to NC. The doctor said that he kept telling her to not try to make the trip down, that they should stop and go to a local hospital. They made it with 3 hours to spare, but he emphasized to us that it was a really dumb thing for them to do.
Anyone else hear any crazy birth stories that just make you shake your head that anyone would be that dumb?
Re: A Story my Dr told me
I'm not even making the 2 hour drive to my Aunts this year (less than 2 weeks from my due date though) because I'm concerned about weather/comfort/going into labour.
My midwife did tell me though that she has had women NOT call when they were in labor, deliver their own babies and then call her after they were born which I think is pretty stupid. What on earth would you do if something went wrong?!
Tell your mom the Dr says no. Dr's are great for that sort of arguement.
Not to mention the drive... car rides suck in 3rd tri.
OMG, could you imagine trying to give birth with a bunch of family, who happen to be Dr's argueing over the best plan? I just pictured it in my head like funny but terrifying cartoon.
