I watch Y&R. I'll turn it on and clean house/make dinner. There has been some insane drama at DH's work, involving federal investigators, under cover stings, etc. Seriously, there was a plot line that was 95% similar to what he dealt w/ at work. I was like, yea, I'm so embarrassed that some of it can actually be real life!
It's total escapism.
I could ask why does anyone still watch the Real Housewives or the Kartrashians. Samefuckedup shittt as the soaps only more pathetic because it IS their "lives."
Heck yeah. I watch Y&R when I'm working on my home business and eating lunch. I watched The Guiding Light religiously until it went off a few years ago, same with As The World Turns. What can I say? I grew up on this crap!
Guilty!!! I started watching GH last year when Brenda came back...and swore I'd stop when she was off again, but here I am DVRing every show and watching it every night!!!

Me! I watch The Bold and The Beautiful every.single.day. Actually my DVR hasn't recorded it for 2 days now and I'm sad. lol. It's only 30 minutes (11 when I fast forward through commercials) and lets me escape reality for a bit (at least that's what I tell my H- lol!)
I watched All My Children for 28 years (which is longer than some of you have been alive!) until it got cancelled this past Sept. I also watch One Life to Live (since 1987) and that's getting cancelled in January. I want to start watching Y&R but I don't have the heart to start watching a new soap.
Heck yes! I've watched GH religiously since my first semester of college 16 years ago this month. I've missed no more than 5 episodes since then. It will literally break my heart if ABC cancels it. It may be cheesy, but when you're involved in the storylines, like so many other shows, the cheese factor doesn't matter.
The ones I have watched off and on are all ABC ones - started watching way back in elementary school when Luke and Laura got married (only saw the last 15 mins) and then would watch after school and in college. Have not really watched since then although will sometimes watch soapnet and did watch some while on each of my maternity leaves and while on bedrest with #2. I have followed the stories by reading the recaps for years. It is so silly and I can go years without watching and still know the people and basically follow the stories.
Some of my earliest memories involve taking a nap/rest on the couch every afternoon with my mother while she watched General Hospital. When I was in kindergarten my grandma picked me up from school just before lunch, we'd go back to her house and watch General Hospital and Days of our Lives.
My soap opera days ended by the time I was 6 y/o, LOL. I don't think I've watched a single one since then.
I watch Young and the Restless! DVR it everyday! I've been watching it off and on since I can remember. My mom watched it when she stayed home with us! There are some lame storylines which is why I like to DVR it so I can fastforward through the ones I don't like.
i watched All My Children until ABC cancelled it earlier this year. My mom watched it so I started watching as a child and watched in on and off throughout my life until the DVR. Then I watched every day. Stupid ABC.
And to the pp, Once Upon a Time, not a soap. Great show though. Now Revenge I consider to be sort of like a soap. Also a great show.
Re: question #2: Does anyone still watch soaps??

I used to watch "As the World Turns," the longest running soap, with my grandma who could still recall the original season.
After about five episodes, I can say I watch "Once Upon a Time" with Ginnifer Goodwin, which is pretty soap-y.
The bump really wanted us to get it in ingrained in our brains that you're the resident soap queen.
Yes!
